Silly title aside
I've been trying using ableton' tension (a plucked string physical modelling synth for those who don't know live) and running it through guitar rig 5 bass patches to make some cool, but still not quite real bass sounding, bass sounds.
Does anyone else know any tricks like that?
Not looking at anything too realistic as far as real bass guitars go, so not interested in sample based bass sounds, but something different and still a bit synthetic sounding.
Nothing like a simple mono synth patch with an envelope modulating the filter cutoff. I feel like no matter what sound you are going for nothing beats a single square wave. Whether its that classic hollow square bass or something a bit deeper more and more natural. I like 0 sustain, and decay/release too taste, but leave some tail to squash nicely with a compressor. Makes for a nice up front bass sound. I've been using the 1176 setting on Presswerk. I usually stack several distortion/saturation units (none 100% wet) and sculpt the sound just so. D16 Devastator and FabFilter Saturn having been making the rounds. Guitar Rig was is great as well, though I don't own it anymore.

Not sure it's synthetic (if it's sampled it was a quick job) and I don't know if you can get it outside of FL Studio, but they've got one called Boobass that likes some compression/transient design to give it more dynamics. After that, I like Squashit or Decapitator for a similarly quick and easy distortion followed by my normal mixing chain (EQ, EQ, Reverb, EQ). Possibly do distortion before transient design.
I'm not sure how synthetic or sampled it actually is, but I used to run 4front's freeware bass VST into guitar rig for a semi-realistic sound. I felt like it was somewhere in between at the time, but I could be full of shit.
Honestly, even throwing cool analog / operator presets into GR could make for some interesting results that sound nothing like the source. Control room pro FTW
Operator in Ableton, or any FM synth can get you really close.
Osc A: Coarse and fine at 1 and 0 respectively
Osc B: Coarse at .5 add in some volume to taste
Osc C: Set a really fast attack and decay to emulate a pluck and find a Coarse freq that works for what you are going for, like 3 or 4, you can add some fine adjustment to create more inharmonic overtones.
