Use your computer for now. You can make a lot with just free shit. It's not worth buying all kinds of crap when you're not even sure what to do with it yet, and you'll have a LOT more freedom with VSTs and samples than with most drum machines.

EDIT: Look for a good MIDI box if you really really want that hands on approach. Something like a padkontrol or a trigger finger. Someone else will be able to make more detailed recommendations.

id go with ghyt, its a lot cheaper and thanks to asio4all very much like the same thing if you know how to set up effect chains for some analog grain

if you dont like it, go for korg electribes, tho i honestly dont know which one might be best since there seem to be like twenty different editions ><

The thing is a lot of that stuff probably isnt done inside the (one) box, and if it is it won`t be an entry level cheapo job.
If you want to do crazy beat edits then you have to put in the time (headaches), but it`s all possible with the right software and a bit of patience.

Sveldt hit the nail on the head. There is no easy way to do it. If there were I'd be giving Squarepusher a run for his money right about now.

1 23

4 5 67
the last three are more workstation grooveboxes but if you want to make creative original IDM type stuff then the Monomachine is it, don't listen to these crazy fools saying "go software" as they all really want an Mono.

Re: What is the best groove box or drum machine affordable to buy to start making IDM

Korg Electribes are your best bet. Cheap-ish, and easy enough for beginners. The older models (EM-1, ER-1, ES-1, EA-1, and the MkII models of those) are great. I'm going to get myself an EM-1 (which actually IS labeled as groovebox, as opposed to the rest which are either drum machine, synth, or sampler) by Korg. Cheap; around $180 or so each.

Don't forget about the "motion sequencing" (ie: recording knob movements). And the trippy chorus and pitch-shifting effects the EMX-1 has. I sold mine a little while ago, the drum sounds are pretty average (but in that classic average way), but it definately is fun.

Re: What is the best groove box or drum machine affordable to buy to start making IDM

Like others mentioned, you don't really need a drum machine for idm. In fact you have more capabilities with ableton and the sampler+impulse than you would with a drum machine.

Only thing I could think of a drum machine for is the samples/hits and the love of using hardware over software.

If you think ableton is a headache and you can't get anywhere with it, then trying to program a drum machine isn't going to make any difference.

If you're still insistent I'd suggest a mono/machinedrum. But in terms of live tweaking things to automatically make idm for you (as you were suggesting in your second post), that's pretty much max/msp or another complex program at work I'm assuming.

Go get NIs Maschine. Best of both worlds and with a stupidly large sample library built in.

I agree about the NI Maschine, its a great bit of gear and as aikighost said it is the best of both worlds. Its also not that expensive for the average person to buy either, unlike a MachineDrum.

If you really want to do it cheaply and go down the hardware route you really cannot go wrong with Korg's Electribe series of products. I own the ER-1, EA-1, EMX, and ESX. The ER-1 creates some brilliant glitchy lo-fi sounding drums and it my favourite of the four Electribes I own. It can even create bass and FX if you start getting creative with it. The ESX is the one to go for though if you have the money as you can customise the sounds by filling it with your own sounds (as its a sampling groovebox), Ive filled mine with drum kits from all the famous drum machines and its amazing. I have loads of classic machines in one box with a good step sequencer and effects etc.

If you want to do it really cheaply get yourself one of these:

I got one on eBay a few weeks ago for £50 and it was brand new. Its got a great sequencer and there loads of drum kits available. It also does bass sounds but unless you know what your doing they are difficult to get sounding good. The only issue you may have with this machine though is the audio outs, they are RCA outs, not 1/4" jacks and sound extremely crackly when connected to my mixer. I can eliminate the crackles with some processing on the computer but it is inconvienient.

My advice would be get an Electribe ER-1 and an Electribe EA-1, midi sync them together and you have yourself a poor mans 303/808 combo. Great fun.

I would vote for the MD SPS1 UW, although its not cheap. Honestly though you are going to get what you pay for. I also own the monomachine but I think the drums are not as good as the MD. It still can do some crazy stuff and the synth machines are excellent. The MD alone isnt good enough for glitch so I usually record it into a daw and work on it further there.
