Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Hello everybody,

I have just discovered this website, and this is my first message.

First point : sorry, I'm french, so I beg you to excuse my bad English.

Thanks to you, I discover a lot of new musics to listen to. I don't know most of the records and bands you quote.

Here is my modest contribution :

Terry Riley : Poppy Nogood and the phantom band – Mescalin mix
La Monte Young
Tangerine Dream : Zeit – Atem
Ash Ra Tempel : Join Inn (for the 2nd tune : Jenseits)
Klaus Schulze : Cyborg – Timewind – Mirage
Edgar Froese : Epsilon in malaysian pale

Tim Hecker : Haunt me – Radio amor – Mirages – Harmony in ultraviolet – An imaginary country
Experimental Audio Research : Worn to a shadow – Beyond the pale – Millenium music
David Bedford : On the other ocean – Leapday night
Brian Eno : Ambient4/On land – The shutov assembly
Cluster & Eno : no title
Eno, Moebius, Roedelius : After the heat
Jon Hassell & Brian Eno : Possible musics
Jon Hassell : Vernal equinox
Lightwave : Mundus subterraneus – Nacht musik – Tycho Brahe – Bleue comme une orange

Iannis Xenakis : Diamorphoses (on Electronic music)
Karlheinz Stockhausen : Stimmung
Bernard Parmegiani : L’oeil écoute
François Bayle : Jeîta
Michel Redolfi : Vox in vitro – Nausicaa
György Ligeti : Lux aeterna
David Hykes & Harmonic Choir : Harmonic meetings – Hearing solar winds – Let the lover be

Acid Mother Temple : In C
Kawabata Makoto : I’m in your inner most

Pan American : 360business/360bypass
Rosy Parlane : Iris – Jessamine
Mirror : Die Spiegelmanufaktur – Still valley
Biosphere : Substrata – Man with a movie camera – Shenzhou
Darwinsbitch : Ore
Lawrence English : Kiri No Oto – A colour fo autumn
Atheus : Soundscapes and drones
Oöphoi : Dreams part 1, 2 & 3 - Subterranea
Graeme Revell : The insect musicians

Pauline Oliveiros
Charlemagne Palestine
Arvo Pärt

I have a question : do you think Labradford is ambient ?

I thank you again.

And now, Gentlemen, I wish you a very good night.

Xu

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet / An Imaginary Country - The 2 most engaging albums of all time (so far) for me. There is not one single millisecond within those two albums that I dislike, I'm like a rabbit in the headlights when listening. I also have a lot of time for Haunt me, Huant me, do it again, but it's more chilled as opposed to the overly engaging sound of the former.

Ben Frost - Steel Wound / By The Throat. The first 3 tracks on Steel Wound are really something special, great music. By the throat is brutal, but not for brutalities sake like the similar stuff I've heard before it, he still manages to keep the classic music elements and melody present, rather than just making an uneducated mess.

also....

Jacaszek - Treny
Nest - Retold
Kiln - Thermals
Fennesz - Black sea

Hello,

I wonder if most of the records quoted here are really ambient,
and not rather electronica or downtempo ?

(Excuse my poor English)

At best we can think of a genre name as a rough guide of what kind of music to expect, but it should never be a clearly definable thing considering music is so varied. Also, considering ambient music is not trapped by a certain tempo like other genres of electronic music (drum and bass for example) it makes it harder to define.
Ambient could be applied as a prefix to any genre, ambient techno, ambient drum and bass, ambient house, ambient music?
If a piece of music has been made originally and not as a copycat piece of work then it's difficult to truly define freeform music of an electronic variety, what is downtempo? what is electronica?

Words are terrible things! Do not trap your mind by thinking about these words we apply to music, it's not an exact science and is essentially just a rough guide. Other genres that are less freeform like drum and bass are usually perpetuated by copycat artists that keep the formalities of that genre relevant because they associate themselves with a 'scene' and are limited somewhat because of that.
I say that as someone that started out making drum and bass around 02-06 so I have experience of that scene, and also I'm aware that when your sound slowly breaks away from the scene, your music no longer becomes relevant to it.

I'm starting to detract from the point now, but I hope you can grab the jist of what I'm trying to say.
I say these as my thoughts only, not as fact.

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Hi Konradsk,

Thank you for your explanations.
In my mind, "ambient" principally meant off-beat music, drones or "spatial music", as the Brian Eno's Ambient records, or as Pink Floyd's Quicksilver on More, Tangerine Dream's Birth of liquid pleiades on Zeit or Fauni Gena on Atem, or Terry Riley's Poppy Nogood.
It's the kind of music I'm looking for.

(Excuse my bad English.)

Xu

Smokers Delight - Nightmares on wax

Cafe Mambo chilled, back from 1999 i think but it still gets a listen

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Personal top five at the minute...

1 - Pillowdiver - Sleeping Pills
2 - Opitope - Hau
3 - Rameses III - I Could Not Love You More
4 - Yann Novak & Marc Manning - Some Clouds
5 - Upward Arrows - Upward Arrows

Just a top five at the minute. It's all very good stuff, really worth listening to if you're into the acoustic-based ambient side of things.

"Blue Flag On The Hill" by Radiosonde is a tune to hear too.

Omicron - Acrocosm, and pretty much ANY acts on the Instinct label prior to their 'acid jazz' years
Vladislav Delay - Demo(n) tracks & Whistleblower
Harold Budd - La Bella Vista & Mysterious Skin Soundtrack
FSOL - Lifeforms
Terre Thaemlitz - Anything by this guy - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Especially 'Soil'
MBV - Loveless - yes, I know it's a 'shoegaze' album, but it sounds Ambient to me when I'm baked:2gunsfiring_v1:

Definitely! I love his 'MIdtown Blues 120' house record. HIs remixes are remarkable too.

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Hi!
I won't be surprising but those are the albums I have to highlist:

Biosphere- an artist who introduced and drove me into ambient music in general-
-Substrata - for all its coldness and spirituality
-Shenzhou- for brilliant idea and concept, btw perfect sleep-album
-Autour De La lune- needless to say, it's sick when you have some good audio gear
(and all the other Biosphere albums except the newest one which IMHO is..extremely weak)

Tim Hecker- Radio Amor- A Godsend album, it's so simple and yet genius, I can't comprehend how it's even possible to produce something like that :} So many emotions in so little

Brian Eno - Ambient on Land (4)- love it for the delicate sounds, oldschool ambient approach and unbelievable atmoshere , it helped me rediscovering ambient when I was kinda bored, getting into ambient again

Fires of Ork II (Biosphere & Namlook) - I can remember I was speechles after first introduction to this piece

greets
