$100 Monitors?

Looking for some decent, low-mid range, (well cheap), studio monitors... I use 8323's for mixing, but I would like to get some monitors, to reference off of, so I can EQ my tracks better...

Was looking at some of this page: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

$100 Each...

The KRK 5"s are $150 each, but those have little, to no low end sub right?

I would prefer some sub on the monitor so I can reference it better, idk if that makes sense :/

Re: $100 Monitors?

You get what you pay for mostly .. sub-bass requires either a sub or 8" woofers.

I have a small RCA home theater sub, couldn't I hook that to a receiver and then into my audio interface? At least, that would give me some sub...

There is *some* sub (down to around 52 Hz on Rokit 5's. The mid-bass on them in general is kind of hyped and poorly defined though. They're not *terrible* for budget monitors, but honestly I'd save up money for something of a bit higher quality, because $100 is small change in the studio monitor world.

Re: $100 Monitors?

Well it could do, if you get used to the sound, but it's hard to complement well with monitors, I used to have exactly that, a home-theater 15" sub and the bass would just be out of place, not adeuate for proper mixing, sure it's cool and boomy for watching movies but that's it.

Smaller 8" or 10" at most and quality ones, like I said there's no shortcut to this, you want quality you need to pay. The rest is down to personal preferences. I have a pair of Adam A7X and thinking about getting the 8" sub with it. KRK also makes a 10" sub, more affordable.

MOST people don't mix with sub also, but if you have one, it's good to turn it on only occasionally to check the mix with the sub, otherwise, I good pair of headphones will let you hear deep bass, even though it's not represented very well, it can tell you if the sub bass is kind of overwhelming your mix.

I have a pair of AKG, you should go to a local store and check them out. But my best advice for you is certainly about getting a pair of good monitors with 6-7-8" woofers, which you can afford, and don't think too much about getting a sub right now.

Ya, I eventually plan on getting new cans, but these Monoprice 8323's are a huge step better than what I was using, so I am happy for now..

I remember when I used to mix on my Panasonic stereo speakers ^__-, those were the days, when I was poor.. I mean, I am still poor, but I am poor with some what good equipment now :3 gehe..

Could not agree more! On another note your monitors can be the best in the biz, but without proper acoustic treatment in your studio it will hardley do you any good!

Re: $100 Monitors?

Seriously, don't bother if that's all you have to spend. Save it, add to it, wait until you have a bigger budget. Unless you luck out and find a crazy good deal, it'll almost certainly be a waste of cash.

Re: $100 Monitors?

Even though it's not a "monitor", I have used the Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones when producing with a laptop. They're actually quite nice, and you can professionally mix on them if you practice getting used to them a bit. I think that's way better than settling for cheap monitors. The key to good mixing is really listening to different sources rather than just having one really good set of speakers, IMHO.
