Disorientating loops?

I love the sound of electronic music when something about the timing throws you off although there is definite repetition.

Something like Kelpe - Toy Castle

I try to achieve it myself but regular shuffle (or triplet timing) doesn't do it.. i'm having more luck with poly/cross rhythms but a lot of songs like these eschew them. Is it an emphasis on the backbeat? I'm not sure.. I'm not very theoretically or mathematically minded. It's something like a risset tone.

Re: Disorientating loops?

Are you talking about some of the "off-time" synth stabs in this tune? The arrangement is pretty funky, but I don't hear anything particularly unusual going on. It really just feels like clever chopping and arrangement to me here. With those off time synth stabs it sounds like the stabs switch between a hard synced/quantized triplet pattern and 4/4.

Swing 16ths and (non swinged) triplets.

Re: Disorientating loops?

I've been experimenting with layering those. It's finnicky though. Gets real busy real quick.
Got any protips?

Yeah I think it might be in the arrangement more than I think.. listening again the most hypnotic thing to me is just the up/up/up/down arpeggiated swung 16ths. I really can't get that sorta sound right though it's something so specific and hard to describe that literally makes me feel dizzy.

Re: Disorientating loops?

I think maybe they're modulating the amount of swing. It's pretty crazy

Re: Disorientating loops?

I think you could get quite close to this sort of feeling by automating the attack on an interesting rhythm. You could experiment with a gater at some point in the effects chain to alter the releases of the notes.

One thing to bear in mind is that once something has repeated a few times, it starts to make sense. In that track you posted, the bits just after the transitions between the various grooves are where it strikes me most - so there's a definite element of the way the compositional structure affects your perception of the music.
