Sleeper Hold is a two track techno EP by music producer Benwaa, and the debut release from his own Gibbon Records. The label's focus is to release electronic dance music that displays emotion and feeling, and Sleeper Hold is definitely a strong illustration of that. A lot of modern dance music seems to often focus solely on the quality of the production, whereas Sleeper Hold skilfully blends the solid production of commercial house music with a deep, meaningful sound.
The titular track opens the EP with a strong beat and a pulsating bassline, starting steady, and gradually bringing in more elements that build toward a layer of ambience and cryptic vocals. The contrast between menacing techno and the eventual ambience of the track is one of the most interesting thing about the release because of the interesting dynamic it creates.
Things get deeper with second track Erroneous Nature of Self Importance. The techno beat subsides, and wooden percussion echoes against dreamy synths to give the piece an exotic vibe, until they play in unison, with the rhythm carrying them off to the end.
Sleeper Hold is a wonderful example of contrast and combination. Not only does Benwaa prove several skill sets to make the music, but in doing so he also shows how the music itself can bring several different elements together, and in doing so creates a work that sounds truly fresh and unique.
