How do you remember complex/basic ideas, melodies, effects, etc. when out?

I was laying in bed last and I had really complex musical ideas coming to me as I was falling asleep. I immediately woke up only to realize that I have no idea how I would write these ideas down so that I would remember them in the morning. My understanding of music theory is elementary at best, and even if I did understand musical theory I'm not sure that would help fully flesh out the synths, drums patterns, etc.

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or systems to remembering complex, or even more basic ideas that you have when out and about?

Re: How do you remember complex/basic ideas, melodies, effects, etc. when out?

I make all my music on my bass guitar so I write stuff down in tabs (numbers corresponding which fret to play). Even when I'm not near my bass I'll write down approximate tabs of what I have in my head, mostly consisting of raw guesses of what I think are the appropriate notes/intervals. When I get home I'll try to puzzle that out.

I usually write rhythms down in music notation or some other quick and practical way, like stripes with long and short distances between them. You can be pretty creative with this, just make it tidy and readable.

If I get some other musical ideas (lyrics/concepts/etc) I'll try to express that in words or just keep thinking about it all day long, if I can't remember it anymore it probably wouldn't be worth it anyway.

Having some instruments close by is always handy though, I've woken up before to grab my bass and jam on some riff I came up with.

When I can, I hum that in my mobile, then I try to replay them on bass guitar (recently) or on a piano roll

This. Hum it, sing it, whistle it, scat it, beatbox it. Even my grandmothers phone has a voice recorder on it. An app that allows overdubbing would also be very handy.

^same! I use my phone to record my ideas, whether it's just a simple melodic phrase or a whole chorus I some sort in my head- unless I lay it down somewhere I will almost for sure forget it. I learned the hard way... Several times.

I just sing it and then I can retrieve it any time I want from the NSA recordings.

Re: How do you remember complex/basic ideas, melodies, effects, etc. when out?

My problem is often that I hear great songs in my head before falling asleep but when I stop the flow to try and recreate what I heard it vanishes into oblivion...

I always wonder if there are better way to channel this creative flow and somehow bring the stuff back from wherever it's hiding

Re: How do you remember complex/basic ideas, melodies, effects, etc. when out?

most of the time i open up a new project with a very basic drum kit ( kick ,snare ) and a bass, and simply wright the idea, if it has some harmony i add some simple chords with a synth , save then close the project, am pretty sure that there are some apps to record small audio on your phone, so you can hum them or sing, then reproduce the thing later on

as for the execution part, you need the spend a crapload of time messing around to learn how to get x/y sound
