Re: Intelís New Memory

I saw another article on CNET that wasn't as informative about the tech itself, but they did say that Intel was looking to work with specialized customers late this year and possibly have it in consumer products next year. Nice timing, I say, I'm looking to upgrade my main rig either late next year or sometime the year after .

I wonder if it's going to be possible to just swap chips over..or will ya need a new motherboard that can take these new chips? Hope it's just a swap thing, as a new board basically could be a pain in the ass for me. Here's hoping.

I think that'll take longer, right now, they're just talking about integrating it based on PCI-E (and M.2, perhaps, for hard drives, but that uses PCI lanes). Eventually, they want to do a newer interface with more bandwidth, but I think it would have to wait for a major chip upgrade that would support more PCI lanes than modern motherboards can (for fast GPUs, memory, and storage all run through PCI). At the very least, they'd probably wait until a new memory standard replaces DDR4, which hasn't even really taken off yet, so I can't see this getting it's own standard for at least a few years.
