How to create a network around yourself?

Hi all,

So I hear this over and over again that creating an active community of like-minded people around yourself is essential if you want to grow as a producer.

I've been trying my best to find people on-line and around town but so far my efforts have been futile.

I've tried seeking relationships through collabs, but my communication with producers wanes after we finish our work together.

I've looked around my small town for people that do what I do in hopes of finding a friend. Unfortunately I haven't found anyone yet (there are some country singers and church band people but no electronic music producers).

I've thought of reaching out to producers that I aspire to BUT I never know what to say. I'm always intimidated by how far ahead of the game they are than me. I feel like I have nothing of value to offer to them.

So my question is for those of you that have found relationships/partnerships/friendships with other producers. How did it happen? And do you have any advice?

Would truly appreciate your insight!

I honestly have a hard time believing there is nothing going on in Portland. I could be wrong...I've never been...

Are there electronic music shows? I bet there are. Half of my state is farm fields and there are hill billies in duck dynasty gear setting up systems in cornfields having a roll to techno for the night...Portland has to have something.

Maybe try a local record shop or instrument shop for info!

Re: How to create a network around yourself?

The most important thing is to get with a club owner and have lots of free drugs and alcohol available for visiting producers, artists, and musicians. Then get yourself some stylish and a little crazy clothing. Do something unique with your image, like wear sunglasses at all times or put a long peacock feather in your hat. Hire attractive women to hang out with you, you know, just hang. College students are always looking for jobs like that.

Get a really nice car that will fit you, your women, and several other local bigs in the back where you can talk really quietly as you cruise the downtown joints late at night. Get with a local printer and print up lots of flyers asking "Who is _your name here__?"

Get in the paper once in while by punching out someone on the street at random.

Put an ad in the local Craigslist looking for talent. Send those that respond a dollar bill with your face painstakingly inked over the face of George Washington.

Re: How to create a network around yourself?

On a serious note, all networking is socializing and you have to make that fun for it to take. If you aren't a social person yourself and don't like to schmooze, then find someone who is and get together with them. I do some group organizing of sporting things and we do regular happy hours. I highly recommend setting something like that up. Start an e-mail list with phone contacts, too. This helps you to invite people to the happy hours. Invite women to the events, always. No one likes a swinging sausage party.

You can also meet people online on forums like this before you meet in person. It helps if you like to participate in forums for your own amusement of course. It's kinda like online dating.

but yes, on a serious note. For better or worse, a lot of this game is who you know and where you go. I got my last residency by playing an open slot at the start of a night (read 7:00pm) but the main dude liked my stuff and we got talking and discovered we both really liked acid house, etc. Then a few weeks later, they asked me to play a bigger event, a few weeks after that another one with a better slot. It turned into a 4 year long thing and we threw some wicked parties.

As someone already said, stuff MUST be happening there, you're just not at it. I grew up in Maine and we had a scene, even with 85% of the state covered in pine trees; a bunch of south of the north folks setting up systems in the woods and partying until dawn. So if Maine, with a state population roughly 2x the population of Portland, OR alone, there's got to be something that you're just missing.

Re: How to create a network around yourself?

I think I am more on the ani socializing side. I'm more about getting down to business and usually don't go on forums much unless I have a specific question or thing I need to figure out. But I see your point. Establishing relationships isn't like getting a new plug in where you just go and buy it and then BOOM you have it. It takes time to foster.

So maybe I should set time aside for me to talk to people on forums, go to music shops and concerts like Relic mentioned.

And of course hire some strippers for my next producer get-together

Actually, hire the college students. You might even get them interested in what you are doing. Who knows? The stripper girls will just laugh a lot and in general lose interest and want to go to iHop for some pancakes that you will have to pay for.

Yeah, not happening.

Yes, socializing is a job in a way. You have to loves it.

well there are forums. I always found it difficult to get anywhere in my local area and my musical fandom has always been more made of people abroad. I prefer it that way.

Re: How to create a network around yourself?

^^true enough.

also remember that the internet isn't really real, it takes a lot longer to connect with people beyond chittle chattle, that's even if you do, and even on places like here.
nothing beats face to face networking for proper results

Re: How to create a network around yourself?

The single most important thing in networking, especially on-line, is actually giving a fuck about what other people are doing. Therein lies the key. As with all things in life you get back what you put in. So when the collab ends, continue to follow their music, comment, give feedback, ask questions about their work, offer to listen to wips, hit share on a link, anything you can do to keep the relationship going. You have to be intentional about it.

Over the years I've developed a handful of these type of relationships with people from right here. One primary one that is now at a point I can send any number of things over without warning and I know its cool because I know I'll be returning the favor in probably a semi short order. Tit for tat at first and before long it just kind of becomes something you and the person on the other end just do.

^ This.

Instead of calling it networking or some other business sounding buzzword, just look at it as making new friends that hopefully you will give a fuck about.

I believe you! I found a lot of the people I met in Austin in the film world were complete two-faced assholes. I'm not surprised the music scene also has a toxic component.

You tend to be able to feel people out better online sometimes, or rather, you can single out parts of their intellect that appeal to you I think. Plus, most of the interaction is at your convenience and can take place over several hours. Many of my good friends I have around me now I met online first, usually in forums of some sort.

See that's exactly what I would love to have. Just someone whom I could send my work to, give them feeback also, and just grow and expand together as music producers.

And as for town issue you guys are right Portland is a big place, but I'm actually currently living at a smaller place -- Corvallis-- for college.

That's a bit of a contradiction though because the business is all about socialising. Like how you said that once you finish a collaboration the relationship dies. That's because you're not actively developing it. If all you do is talk about the task at hand, you'll never get very far. Anyone you've worked with in the past should get at least an email asking what they've been up to and telling them what you've been up to every few months or so. Any time you've gotten something close to finished, you need to be sending it to these people. You need to be going out to clubs to see gigs and talk to people.

That's why I haven't done anything in two years because I'm not going out to clubs or other places associated with the creative scene. I don't really want to be bothered with all of that scene rubbish. But when I write something worth getting out there, I'll have to get back in the game.

Re: How to create a network around yourself?

It's an interesting one. I've made some amazing connections. All online. Mostly through showing interest in their stuff. Others through them coming to me first. But I don't feel I have anything to offer a real life scene as I don't (yet) have anyway to perform live. Plus confidence stops me.

Having said that. Last week I was sat in your average pub with my friend and got talking to a guy about music. He was really cool. And @Mizuchi and I are going to meet up when he comes over here

But in terms of keeping the connection alive, it's just natural to me to remain interested in what they are doing, feedback and support and share their music and generally keep in touch.

If you ever had people into music at school it is a good idea to keep in touch with them, see what they are up to if they still produce at all. I know I have acouple of friends who I used to be in bands with that recently have ended up back in my life.
