Re: The future of IDMf

I would love to submit my music but I don't really have a style you know, it's not IDM, it's not dance, it's not dubstep, I don't think anyone would be terribly interested. Am I wrong?

Re: The future of IDMf

I remember you guys were messing around with this idea before and it never happened but I henestly think you should assign mods to certain "sub-forums" instead of the entire thing, I think this would really help hash out much needed issues if they were to focus more on one section of the forum

I don't think they care much about the forum moderation.

My music isn't technically under those genre labels either and I seem to have good feedback/listeners here.

Re: The future of IDMf

I'm really happy to see some support here, thanks everyone.

@Proton- The point is that I would like to see IDMf being a place for "forward thinking" music, not necessarily a specific genre. I try not to let that complicate my taste, it would make me happy just to know that our members on this forum use IDMf as an outlet to show people their work and be proud of it. I think in the past we have gotten bogged down too much with thinking about what style a certain release is.

That said, how about seeing some more actual IDM being put out on this bitch? And breakcore. And drum and bass. House. Minimal. Ambient. Experimental/Avant-garde. Even more dubstep. Industrial kids I'm talking to you too. Even people like Proton who are unsure of what their style is, we want you too. Everyone. I'd like to really showcase what this forum is about.

-----

@rewir3d: pee in their butts. they like that.

In all seriousness though, without the mods, there would be so much more spam and disorganization (as disjunct as this place seems sometimes... there are almost 50,000 threads here and almost half a million posts, SORRY WE AREN'T PERFECT).

Thats why I think mods should focus on certain sections of the forum rather than the whole thing This place is really expanding and can be a lot for the mods to get to at all times but if they have a specific task it should make it easier to tidy there own sections up!

Concur, but we have a tradition of roving mods here. The gurus also have some mod abilities and to a greater or lesser extent exercise those.

I'm a roving mod on another forum (our post count has died down significantly since the financial meltdown at the end of 08, so there are only two active mods) and I moderate a specific set of sub-forums on another forum still (recently reactivated after "sleeping" for four years).

Both styles work. It depends on numbers of mods, attitudes to moderation (agreeing on what is and isn't spam/ban/deletion worthy) and strong leadership from the admin(s).

The big question becomes who takes what responsibility? Also, imho, we need to retain the roving moderator concept to allow for situations where someone has life get in the way; can't let an area go to seed simply because the person responsible can't do it for now.

Some good discussion coming and hopefully the path forward will emerge clearly shortly.

What about a set of rules, to begin with, since it was largely bitched for?

Re: The future of IDMf

Going back to publishing some IDMf artists, I'd love to see Abreaktor or Claymore relased on IDMf.
Ab because I think he's one of the most "daring" artists here, Claymore because he's Claymore and his stuff is actually great.
Plus, he's Claymore.

Hey thanks man, I appreciate the kind words. There have been some bumps in the road over the years but we've learned some things (well I have) and I want to see this place thrive again, with lots of releases from the likes of people like Abreaktor and Claymore. We still aim to release the best quality work but I don't think we have to worry about that here with our breadth of talent.

Glad to hear you spin us all the time, that's friggin dope. It'd be great to hear how other people use IDMf music in this thread as well. I wouldn't mind the thread derail.

Re: The future of IDMf

Fidelium, more power to your elbow. IDMf is a fantastic place for musicians and music fans, and it's only natural that it should be bursting with music made by the members. It's important to remember two things: if the netlabel is going to be Creative Commons, then fun is paramount (everyone should feel able to contribute, wherever their talents lie); there is a danger that too many releases will result in a drop in IDMf's high standards.

You have a tricky task in having to please the forum members/contributors and music fans who enjoy your/our(!) netlabel and expect to hear something worthwhile. I think that there's enough talent and energy among the members to ensure a steady supply of good music.

The netlabel is an exciting prospect for the budding musicians here; it adds an extra frisson of excitement to this febrile place. The forums would be poorer without it.

For all those wavering over whether to submit music: do it. You love music, don't you? Why not enjoy it even more? Slap it down, get excited and have fun with it. What's the worst that could happen? Trust me, I've had my ears raped numerous times by godawful netlabel albums - the stuff I hear from IDMf and the members' signatures is ok by me.

Best of luck with your endeavours. I've already got IDMf009 on my listening pile.

Re: The future of IDMf

There's definitely a lot of talent on here.. One suggestion I would make is to give the artists complete creative control over the releases..
I mean, most labels out there that I have been in contact with end up choosing the tracks they like, and I sort of just go with it. It would be nice to have a label where we know the artist is responsible for the track list.

That being said, I saw the OP where it said "submit finished albums" so I guess there won't be any changes after submission much. Except maybe production problems.
