Ok i got a couple techniques on my mind.
1) How do they create their drums? I feel like its a mix of white noise and drums through some filters and delays or something. Think Pursuit of Happiness (and no im not a Kid Cudi fan)
2) Guitar...I know they use guitars live, but in their actualy tracks are they using guitars or synthesizors? what effects?
thanks!

There's a thread on Ratatat already, but ok...
1) Nothing special, just well-mixed/layered drum machine hits. [ Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register ] There you go. These will last you a lifetime.
2) Both. Use simple sounds and get into stompboxes! Loads of octave effects, short delays and envelope filters are being used. Guitar Rig is awesome for emulating crazy chains because it's actually very, very modular and you can use the modifiers to add alot of motion and modulation! Take a simple synth sound and layer it with a clavinet, match the amp envelopes, resample it, throw it into a sampler, map velocity to cutoff going up and resonance going down and there you go, a very very nice sounding, plucked synth sound with a string-instrument touch.

Well, "well-mixed" isn't a put-down.. Seperate everything that isn't the kick into at least 10 bands, pan 'em manually and don't be afraid to exclude some in the mix to make it slick sounding and not cluttered. Yeah, the use some white noise hits and stuff like that... Play around with white noise through filters for a few minutes while recording and throw some chops of that in on the frequency band seperated tracks.

I tried tip 2 because I'd never heard of it, and that makes for a pretty wicked psytrance bass.

Yeah, I bet it does if you use the right synth sound, play it in low octaves and do the velocity thing! You're welcome! I've never been a fan of psytrance (except for 2 weeks in 7th grade when I thought Astral Projection was the best thing in the universe) but I've been playing around with basslines of that ilk recently by heavy use of FM synthesis. Try throwing that into the mix!

Haha! Thanks all you "new" people. Got over 10 people giving me rep for the 200 drum machines link... It used to be all over the place a year ago, but the fact that you all appresh it makes me think that I should dig up all the old links I thought everyone already knew about.

Alright, that's it... I'll ftp my entire non-commercial sample bank during a few days next week. Keep your eyes opened.
It's somewhere around 40gb.

I feel like Ratatat utilizes a shitload of reversing in their sound, all their melodies sound like they were played backwards and then reversed or something.
