Re: A topic for Dj's :)

iv got 2 second hand pioneer cdj 800 - mk1 as they are so much cheaper and still have the same jog wheel as the more recent models. Combine this with the pioneer djm 400 and it works great - nice and simple!

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

I have two numark tt200s with a numark m1, however one of my tone arms on the tables is broken... I was looking at the ns6/ns7 although I'm unsure I'd want to spend quite so much. I could sell one of my tables (I still have vinyl I'd like to play and mess with)... I have stuff I can mess with tho, I'm have something to keep my occupied.

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

I've done sets with only my laptop and the Traktor Pro program and that has worked pretty well.. But a midi-mixer (Traktor Pro mixer maybe) would be nice to accompany it..

Although when i kickstart my career i am unsure whether i want to go the DJ (traktor) or the performance (ableton, bits and pieces set) way.

I'm mainly using the Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S4 and Traktor Pro 2. I also have a CD setup with 2 Numark NDX800's and a Behringer DDM4000. Eventually working on upgrading the CD setup.

I dont have XLR cables and he does. Combine this with it being his PA and him not liking digital style turntables, as well as already having his rig all set up and the ns6 being as easy to carry as a laptop. I'm not spending any more time than I have to to set up for a fuckaround mix so it's just easier that way. RCAs into his mixer, cross fade, done.

We did have it all running from mine one time but it involved unplugging all his shit, moving his 1200s into weird positions so that the ns6 had more room on his desk and then reversing the process when we were done. It's just not worth the time spent even if it does make life easier for me. I'm hardly the most skilled DJ anyway so i like making it harder for myself so that it's so much easier when im alone.

didn't get the part where you're mixing elsewhere gotcha gotcha

edit: how is the ns6 btw? Was looking at the ns7/ns6 as I'd love to dj my digital selection.

I love it. I think due to the 4 decks it leaves you with a lot of live remixing potential. I've not really delved into that too far yet (although i have had 2 decks playing the same track all with different things going on).

The things I really like about it:

The feel of the platters. They're slick, and quiet. There's no clicking like on the DDJ/CDJ's and I liked that. To me it felt like a better quality platter. Maybe some people like a platter that sounds like it's spinning on a failing bearing but I don't.

Size/weight. It's light and relatively small considering the size of the platters. Since I don't have a case/bag for it, I like it's lightness because I can sling it under one arm and have my macbook in my bag put over my shoulder and can get around easily. Probably not a major issue if it wasn't light, but makes it more mobile in my eyes.

Build quality. It's great, can't fault it EXCEPT for one niggling issue I have. The USB jack seems a bit wobbly for my liking. It hasn't been a problem thus far (a couple of months), but if you're the type of person to throw gear around, maybe have a good look at that first. It may be my unit only lol.

Functions. So many possibilities like I said before. If you wanted to you could have a few different tracks going and "sample" from them all (if you were good with a cross fader). I particularly like how you can set a track up with loop points defined, and come back to the track later with all the points still there. Makes it so a whole set could be prepared before hand and played out live. Awesome stuff.

The things I don't like:

On unpacking it, I followed the setup steps, read the manual etc and installed it as I should have. I plugged everything in, turned it all on and...well, "Hardware not connected". It took me about half an hour of googling and reading the Serato/NS6 facebook page before I realised it wasn't just my new Macbook Pro, or my Windows 7 laptop or the NS6 itself. Just Serato. I eventually found someone who had written/obtained a program called "Midi Monitor" that fixed it all. This shouldn't be something you have to face when you've just dished out $1400AUD for something though. It's like buying a car and turning the key and having nothing happen. Pissed me off a little to be honest. I didn't understand how a company can release something (whether it be software or hardware) that has such a major error. Tonnes of people were experiencing the same thing too and Numark are fucking AWFUL for getting back to you on things. (I wrote them an email over 3 months ago asking something about the NS6 before I purchased that STILL hasn't been replied to).

On the other hand people have been complaining about the cross fader for scratching purposes, and Numark have released an upgraded one that they are sending anyone who applies for it for FREE (incl. free postage). So if I receive my new cross fader in 4-6weeks I'll forgive them on the email.

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

I use 2x SL1210mk5, Ecler NUO 3, Shure M44-7 and a bunch of vinyl.

I'm gathering a whole library of digital files since I kindo stopped buying vinyl in 2008.
When I can, I get WAV, AIFF, ALAC, (bandcamp releases rule!) all so I can add a DVS system on top of my setup when I get the cash for it.

I've used Ableton to play digital music, but it's not satisfying as it takes too much time to prepare and leaves you with not much to do while on stage (cept for drinking and smoking = lame ass dj/artist image).
I'm talking about doing a DJ set, not controllerism.

In the mean time I think I have to switch to CD's which I kind of hate. I'm stuck between Vinyl and digital files on my drive which I can't mix in a pleasant way. (or I'd have to spend even more money to get CD players, but they don't allow scratching).

So yeah, digital is a curse for me, things would be a lot easier if I could get all those wonderful tracks on dubplates or vinyl.

yea i used to do that, making a set and somehow it felt like cheating

i did have 4 tracks on beat slicers and effect racks, so there was stuff to do, also dropping loops here and there, but you lose the ability to play tracks you feel like playing

gna go out on a limb here for sounding like capt obvious, but not digging timecodes?

Re: A topic for Dj's :)

I used to have a pair of Pioneer CDJ-100s and a DJM 300 and used them for years, now I use Ableton and my microKONTROL, not the ideal controller for dj use but its what I got. It does fine except the knobs have much farther to travel than teh DJM to reach 0db...

And in the heat of mixing I ripped a few faders off, they sure don't make studio controllers the same way as DJMs.... The sockets the posts are seated in are like, 1.5mm deep, and made of plastic. A baby could fart on it and the fader would pop off. And they don't just pop back in. And to top it off the PCB they're mounted to is literally buried under all the rest of the guts.

Ive made do with 4 fades just fine, though, the 8 pots are now the mixer ;P

I havent had spare dough for CDs in a while, and I havent really found anything I want to buy, Im satisfied with net releases as far as others' work but my focus these days is on my own material and live setup which Ive jsut about perfected (all realtime synthesis with as little prearrangement as possible without being too repetitious, thanks to Thesys. Im pretty pleased)

I do wish I had a dedicated Live-djing controller, and these

I don't quite understand what you mean by that.

I set some warp markers on my whole DJable music collection (I agree it was pretty long, even if I don't have that much stuff) and I just click and drag the file from the Windows file explorer, iTunes or even the Ableton file explorer when I feel like I want to keep Live full-screen all time, into one of my 4 "deck" audio channel, and it's right there ready to play, beatmatched. The only preparation I need to do for a set is to warp my tracks.

It's as flexible as a pai... As many CDJs as I want!
