Does anyone here like Jazz? For anyone thats interested these are good starting points:
John Coltrane
Miles Davis
Eric Dolphy
Sun Ra
Ornette Coleman
Cecil Taylor
I recommend downloading Miles Davis - Bitches Brew which is Sublime and Epic from megaupload.com. I might be going to a Jazz club on the weekend so I might get to see this stuff live. Also there's great descriptions in Jack Keroauc's "On the Road" about Jazz if anyone's interesting in reading something good...

Giant Steps by Coltrane is to me the essential jazz album.
The work by Monk and Coltrane are a close second.

I'll definitely check that out. I've only listened to 2 Jazz albums so far: Bitches Brew - Miles Davis and A Love Supreme - John Coltrane.

try Alice Coltrane... (matey's wife)
more minimal aproach, very spiritual.
- Journey into Sachidananda (not sure that's right spelling)

Chris Corsano - drummer
C. Spencer Yeh - violin
Paul Flaherty - sax
Wally Shoup - sax
These guys all tend to get together fairly frequently and make a fan-fucking-tastic racket. Chris Corsano is a god amongst mere mortals.

I just watched the Les Paul dvd "Chasing Sound" which documents Les and his wife Mary Ford`s days on the road, how he invented his own electric guitar which became the Les Paul model and how he invented the first sound on sound recording machine 2-track.
It touches on his days playing with all the greats in Chicago,NYC and Hollywood.
Well worth a watch, what a great old bloke, still playing live every week in NYC at 90+.

if you like Bitches Brew, check out his Miles' other fusion releases:
In A Silent Way
A Tribute To Jack Johnson
On the Corner
his bands through this period were top notch:
Chick Corea & Herbie Hancock on keys (check out his Herbie's Headhunters album as well)
John McLaughlin on guitar (also check the Mahavishnu Orchestra stuff)
Joe Zawinul on the organ
Wayne Shorter on sax
Mike Henderson on bass
Billy Cobham and Tony Williams on drums (depending on the album)
all the solo releases by these guys are solid as well.

Much as I enjoy The Bad Plus, I also find them massively over rated simply because they're one of the few remotely "trad" acts around with any substance.
