Hahah, I was being so shitty that night. I love Renoise though. It's just comfortable for me after learning to use a simple tracker and moving on to Renoise which allowed more freedom for automation, and VST support.

You're totally right though, it shouldn't really matter what you're using so long as it's comfy and you enjoy using it.

Every new piece of equipment kind of frustrates the hell out of me to begin with and I always base my judgement of the software on that, I'm sure many other people do as well. Even the most remedial software does not prevent one from composing a piece of beautiful or terrifying music.

Renoise for me.

It is the only software that I have used that feels like playing an instrument. Sure, there are some really frustrating things about it but, there seem to be endless possibilities within its limitations.

Oh, and it is super quick for composing once you know what you are doing.

Re: Your favorite DAW and why (not a vs. thread)

Reaper. Super affordable and it was the DAW I took the most time to learn because it doesn't have any restrictions on the demo version except for the nag screen. Once I read the manual, spent time with it, learned the shortcuts etc. It became very easy for me to get ideas down in the DAW. This would go for any DAW you pick though. Its just the one I'm most comfortable with.

I don't like the specialised window because it's huge and takes up a lot of space and I don't want to look at it all of the time. Windows Explorer integration like in FL Studio makes the most sense. Also I like FL Studio's folder bookmark feature. That also saves a lot of time.
If you're talking about Reaper's explorer window, it can be opened and closed with ctrl-alt-x, and also resized and docked/undocked however you please, like pretty much everything in Reaper. Then there's the tempo matching and drag + drop features in it too. When I discovered that feature, working with samples got at least twice as fast, probably more.

Mulab from MuTools. So many possibilities with the Mux (make your own synths and Fx's)
and/or customize an exsisting preset.

Frequently updated and not overfilled with a ton of menu's that confuse me.

Re: Your favorite DAW and why (not a vs. thread)

Ableton

Im most comfortable with it
I get it
I can run Maschine and other DAWS directly through it. I tend to do this in the mixing/mastering stages. Helps add extra layer using different programs rewired in. Same goes with using a range of different samples, field recordings, synths/etc. I love my apc40 as well, i guess its just a matter of preference and i just feel most comfortable with so i roll with it.

I feel its good to search around tho, test out some demos, get a feel for what you can really gel with.

Its all about workflow, getting into that zone, and just making the best emotional deep hearted stuff you can conjure.

I really enjoy the workflow in Logic, but I'm starting to divert my energy into Ableton as I'm beginning to build live sets that I can play in public.

Can you compose an entire piece of music, that has a beginning middle and end, in some way in Reaktor? As in multiple parts (drums, samples, synths, what have you) hit play, sit back, and listen?

I've only used one device / ensemble at a time in combination with other stuff going on in Live.
1. Yes you can, but that would be hard as hell. If you want to do something like this, you will need to build a chain of sequencers and sequence functions that manipulate the sequencers over time. These sequencers will then be connected to the audio generators(samplers and synths). You also need to have a input interface to input functions directly or in a easier variant as curve representations of the functions. Thats called algorythmic music, which is special thing that autechre does. There is also a autechre reaktor patch from some years ago that exactly does that.

2. The other way would be to build something in reaktor that mimics a piano roll of a DAW and works as a sequencer, which also implementable. But why should we do that? There are DAWs for this purpose already!

Okay... then again more detailed, why do i use reaktor again? Because i build my own samplers and i play everything live using these. Think of it a bit like a beardyman or tim exile sampler setup, but without the live mic input as actual audio base. I'm no beatboxer. My sounds are samples that i create up front using my field recorder, analog gear or reaper. I record the world and play it, cause i can hear music in every existing sound. This is my little private mad trip.

This pretty well sums up my experience with Ableton, its my home, its comfortable.

I don't mean to get off topic but a question for you Suffice, just in general what are you using the APC40 for mostly in ableton? Is it for auditioning clips to build an arrangement? Just as an overall midi controller for mapping effects and levels for each track etc?

I have a bit of a guilty conscience, the girlfriend bought me one a couple years ago for xmas and it has barely been used. I also have a maschine which became the centerpiece of my workflow within ableton. I feel like using both at the same time would be a hand full

Ableton Live due to the interface. So minimal, yet concise and easy to navigate. Studio One is a close second.

Re: Your favorite DAW and why (not a vs. thread)

Started using Maschine. Learned that so far and its really good. Turns out no real DAW.

So I started using ableton. Still learning and working the manual sometimes. Just gonna stick to it. Reason I got into it was its popularity. Dont know much about other DAWs.
