Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
So lately I've been listening to The Glitch Mob a lot, and I've noticed that many of their songs have very cinematic beats that you'd imagine hearing in the battle scene of a movie.
If anyone:
a. knows The Glitch Mob and can give me some advice in making beats like theirs, or
b. doesn't know The Glitch Mob but knows what I'm basically saying about the battle scene beats,
then I would be very happy if you'd post some suggestions for me.
Thank you!

There you go. Not sure how close you can get with garageband though. You might need to get some better software.

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
Well, JD1112, that video was very interesting, although I will confess that much of it meant very little to me, but I don't really see what it had to do with my question. Maybe I didn't specify what I was asking for well enough, but I was actually thinking of something simple like: "You place the kick here and here to make it sound blahblah, then put this effect on to do blahblah." Thanks for the feedback though!

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
Is that really what you want ? Someone to tell you "play these notes, these sounds and that rhythm" ? Don't you want to try out for yourself a little bit ?
Can't you listen to the track and try and extract a bit of what it makes it like it is ?
If you feel like you can't single out the different elements, maybe you need a little more time getting used to making music and understanding how it's done ?

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
For what it's worth, when I was first starting out and before I figured out my own style, I absolutely tried to emulate others. It's how I (and I'm guessing lots of others) learn. I'd hear a sound or a style that I didn't know how to make, and I'd make it a mission to learn how to do it. I'd be lying if I said I didn't still do it every now and then. I love learning new tricks. I also learned to play guitar and some piano the same way, through the music I liked.

Place the kick on the first and third beats and the snare on the 2nd and 4th beats. Then mess with the tempo until you get the speed that you want and then fill in the spots in between the beats with high hats and toms or other kicks then layer a synth melody on top of it.

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
You could put same example song by glitch mob maybe? But by you description of battle beats my guess is that maybe you`re looking for orchestral percussion samples, like timpani?

I didn't say you shouldn't do that ; just that you shouldn't wait for other people to tell you how the whole thing's done in details but experiment by yourself to try and recreate the sounds. You'll learn on the way.
And before trying to recreate someone's music, you need a bit of knowledge on how to use your music making tools (esp. with electronic music where it's so broad).

glitch mob's drum patterns usually don't have kicks on 1 & 3. It's breakbeats, with space between the hits. Often playing with emphasis on the silence in between.
And unusual sounds as snares.

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
Thanks for the feedback! I think, after reading your comments, that I will go the listen and (attempt to) emulate route, hopefully with a good outcome!

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
np. the first step would really be to try and decompose the beat you're trying to recreate ; try to hear the different elements it's composed of

The outcome will be utter shit, and you're gonna have to live with that for a loooong time man. That's how you learn.

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
Sure, but if these forums are any indication, the most common mistake people make is to get ahead of themselves and end up discouraged.

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
When it comes to producing a cinematic emotion in a track, for one thing Damage (a industry standard for really punishing cinematic drums beats) definitely aids in creating a strong impact with each drum, but I believe at the heart of cinematic beats is pounding those drums with a tailing ambient synth. A great resource for cinematic electro are video game soundtracks (like Noisia's DmC OST) where you'll find big quick pounds of basses and drums with trailing ambiance, a great experience in my opinion. Hope this helps -KadaVir

Re: Making Cinematic, Glitch Mob-Esq Beats
Take a look at Stormdrum. There are always new sound libraries coming out for cinematic drums though. Basically look for stuff that would be marketed to Hanz Zimmer type composers for Michael Bay type films. Also, just grab some samples from movie trailers. There are often cool, giant drum hits that you may be able to use.
Cheers,
Nick
