Only this forum.

The APA and the MLA, as of last year, officially and formally recognized IDMforums.com and it's member base as experts in this field.

Futureproducers.com and dubstepforum.com were subsequently denied their official requests for recognition.

Re: Why is IDM defined as intelligent?

I always thought of IDM as more complex than other genres of electronic music (more interesting sounds, lots of changes through the song, possibly set to weird time signatures, experimental, etc.)

Well then, it is clearly ok to cite from IDMF.com (RFJ, 2012)

To answer this seriously as I teach college writing...I'd allow a student to do this as a survey (primary research, gathering your own data) and cite it accordingly. Which in my mind would require them to describe their survey method, list the questions, etc. in an appendix.

I often let students use personal interviews and surveys for research projects.

It's actually APA

Just the forum wouldn't let me do an indent on the second line of the citation. Using usernames just seems so strange.

Re: Why is IDM defined as intelligent?

I think it's just that there's the perception that the sort of music classified as "IDM" is more complex structurally, and more mathematical to produce compared to traditional 'dance music'. I suppose there's some truth in that, since it can take quite a lot of thought and effort to make something that breaks away from musical norms and still sounds 'good'. But I'm also aware that a lot of IDM (or any experimental music) is the result of effortless fucking about and randomnness being pretentiously passed off as deliberate and precise.

Re: Why is IDM defined as intelligent?

I'm sure IDM is just another name for Leftfield.. Music that did not fall into any particular genre or was a mixture of genres like ambient and electro for example..
The intelligent tag, I think comes from the drum and bass days in the 90s, when d+b split into all sorts.
One new d+b genre to emerge back then was Intelligent drum + bass which used intricate beats, filtered beats and clever looping.. Squarepusher.. . Venetian snares. . .

Re: Why is IDM defined as intelligent?

I always considered IDM not as a genre but as a characteristic to certain music.

It's imo electronic music that's more sophisticated and varied then some ocean sounds with whales in the background for example.

It creates brain activity... Following the sounds with your mind is a result of it...

Re: Why is IDM defined as intelligent?

I always figured "Intelligent" was analogous to the terms progressive and technical. I agree that the term IDM sounds stupid and pretentious; I still tell people that's what I make when asked though!
