Xenochrony

"Xenochrony is a studio-based musical technique developed at an unknown date, but possibly as early as the early 1960s, by Frank Zappa, who used it on several albums. Xenochrony is executed by extracting a guitar solo or other musical part from its original context and placing it into a completely different song, in order to create an unexpected but pleasing effect. He said that this was the only way to achieve some rhythms." - Wikipedia

i used this technique some when i first started making music back in junior high. not very successfully but it was fun none the less. i really like its application in general.

anybody got anything relevant to share? id love to hear something new

can make for some very strange vibes

Re: Xenochrony

Do you know if he used the actual recordings from earlier songs of his? Or was he talking about adapting and transposing parts from other artists' songs and re-recording them to fit?

When I saw the word Xenochrony I thought you were going to talk about the speculative study of alien music, you know, in the same vein as [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
. But lets not derail the discussion with that juicy idea

I think this idea has been in the musical zeitgeist for many years now. The argument against modern copyright/ip law is often centred around interpretation that most music is in fact borrowed from somewhere else, and is a completely natural way of creating something new.

Re: Xenochrony

I regularly go over my old stuff, pick out interesting riffs/beats, make them into rex loops and use them in other projects. It's a great way to recycle all those unfinished projects.

Re: Xenochrony

Sounds like a Frank Zappa idea to me. Not sure it's really that interesting tbh, at least as far as a solo goes. But as long as it's not totally out of key, sure why not. It's really just a lengthy sample that's probably not going to be easy to make sound coherent at all times.
