Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
I do think the best time to work on a beat is when you have just woken up and you are feeling fresh. Your mind is quite clear and ideas flow easily to your head and you are able to process them because your cpu isn't overloaded just yet - hey, something like that. So, really, it's all about sleep, which relates to freshness of mind and ultinately a fresh beat.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
I usually don't feel my clearest in the morning, fresh after waking up.
I'm usually kinda groggy and I'm often still tired when I wake up.
That doesn't go away until I've been up for at least an hour, sometimes less, sometimes longer - depending on what I do after I wake up.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
I usually work on tightening up a mix and balancing out sounds in a already in progress song during the morning. However at night I'm sleep deprived and can make awesome new songs that is mostly ambient shit that blows my mind. It's just easier because you are looking for something to bring you to outer space during sleep deprivation. I don't want to go to outerspace in the morning.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
I found out yesterday, that it's definitely morning for me, regardless of what sleep I have had.
24 hour duty, went to bed around 930 am-woke up at 5 pm, and didnt really get crap accomplished except starting a few pieces of rubbish. Stayed up till 4 am. Woke back up at 8 am and put some finishing touches on two WIP's.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
I usually start making music at night and continue untill early morning, then I'll go to bed and fix all the shit that I just created when I wake up. It works for me cause at night I care less about where the song is going and then in the morning I'm able to pick out a direction from the mess and stick with it.

I only have the opportunity to work on music at night. What I can say about the morning is that nothing ever sounds better that it did the night before. If anything it's usually worse...sometimes much worse, like "what the hell happened to this mix?" worse. I'll have to try doing some work in the morning to be able to compare...given that I often hear problems with mixes, seems like the morning might pay some dividends.
I think I have other issues contributing. Among them, I've reading all this about EQ and compression but taking it too far and ending up in the EQ rabbit hole. DIfferent topic, tho.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
Definately late at night. In the morning I can't focus properly and end up doing mistakes all the time, which doesn't really work well with the fact that I get easily pissed off at anything in the morning too. I've often noticed that my best time to work is from 1 am to 4 am.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
I haven't followed this thread and I don't know the value of either recording.
I did however stay up late one day and get my basic song recorded. It got played on Ben's show. I think it sucked actually after hearing it.
Now, today I recorded myself playing a lot of orchestral instruments. I love it. I get to crank my monitors. I don't really effect play as much as other people, so it may not be awesome, but I enjoy it.
However, they've both been early morning recordings.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
For me it's more a matter of whenever I can so I can't really be picky. I've recently started getting up an hour and a half earlier so that I can get some time in before work every day, and just knowing that I have a set end point changes my approach--I have to be more focused, where at night it's really just go until I'm too tired to keep going so I end up fucking around a lot more.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
I like both really. I like sunny days to produce good sounds then later that night I'll fine tune or improve them.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
i have come up with amazing work in the morning and late at night both.early morning is good if you had a good night sleep.at night after a whole day of producing your ears get tired and its hard to realize whats actually sounding good.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
late at night. the only thing I feel like doing early in the morning is not being awake. having said that, I usually get the urge to have a couple of drinks in the evening which doesn't really lend itself to productivity.

Re: Producing in early morning vs late night
interesting...didn't expect so many people producing in the morning
today was the first time i tried to do it after breakfast, and it was suprisingly good, cause usually i always produce during night-time, or late afternoon...mainly because of this:

but today i didnt have so much trouble getting back into orbit, after lunch my head was completely clear...
i hate it when i cant get a new track out of my head...constantly having new ideas on how to improve sh*t, keeps me also sometimes awake at night (when producing before going to bed)
