sometimes i like to do stuff high aswell for the creativity and starting a general idea of a song.
however i need to redo most of the work the next day sober, because it mostly sounds like shit^

I've done lots of creative things stone sober and stoned/drunk to varying degrees. I don't feel like I get better ideas that way or that they come easier and I think there is more editing involved later.

Also, I'm really about done with everything but beer....just not worth the hassles...so I sincerely hope I don't loose whatever talent I may have....

Additionally, it might just be public perception since their sobriety was a matter of public debate. It could also be, depending on the drugs, that the way they heard sounds changed when the worked sober, so their style changed and people didn't like it.

I think this is being really oversimplified. But whatever...really I just feel like being a cunt and arguing...

fair point but i doubt weed causes much drama at all. in any situation.

it does when douchebags make a way bigger deal out of it than they should and cause you serious life problems for smoking it, like forcing you to go to rehab, calling the cops on you, refusing to help you with things, belittling and tearing you down for it.

When I make music high, I can get in the groove almost immediately.. when I'm not high it takes more than half an hour usually.. needless to say I am almost always high when making music..

I think there are different ways to use drugs. For me I need a level of serious intention in my usage, I mean I don't find it very productive to get stoned or tripping and just 'see what happens' or just to sort of spice things up. It's gotta be more thoughtful than that and more integrated with my creative practice. Aint sayin I'm really rigid with the way I behave while altered, I still like to go with the flow of it, but I try to keep myself focused in some sense of the word.

For example, if I have a new track that I want to analyse from a different angle, I'll get stoned and listen to it. Or if I've been thinking about a new idea and want to see it in a different light, I'll get stoned and think about it. Or if I'm stoned / tripping, I'll sit there and write melodies and beats in my head, and I'll do it in a repetitive way, paying a lot of attention to what I'm doing, so that I can remember what I learn there.

There is, as mentioned earlier, the danger that one might come to depend on drugs for creativity, but this can be avoided. You gotta find a middle ground.

Idem. I have composed both sober and high. Listening afterwards, compositions while high are worse. I will sketch a basic idea of what I have in mind sober, and the re-listen high. And re-listen, and re-listen again (high and sober). To me, weed gives me a different perspective. It makes me focus on details that I am not 100% aware while sober.

It can go either way really.

Getting stoned before I fire up my daw is a usual ritual for me, however I don't go overboard with it and get so baked that I just start staring at the screen. Haha.

Does anyone remember that family guy episode? The one where Peter and Lois think they're making a good song but it actually sucks? I always use that as my motivation not to be too stoned. Lmao.

Not that bud intensely changes your perception like family guy, but it does make a difference and I find if I go overboard with it, I work a lot slower. But just the right amount makes me focused and come up with some intricate things.

It's all what you know your limits are. Don't smoke 5 blunts before you start making a song; you might not get good results. Or then again maybe it will?

I have had many "Family guy moments" when listening to tracks made extremely high. I just smile and might work on it later.

I'm going to have to disagree with this also.

When I went to treatment this was a major concern of mine. How on earth would I be able to enjoy even listening to music without being intoxicated, in one form or another, much less have the inspiration to make any?

I have found the opposite to be true. It did take a bit to reverse the psychological effects of 17+ years of external stimulation but not all that long in the grand scheme of things. Today I'm able to concentrate more, focus and, get shit done that I am happy with. Sure I still run into making shit that I think is awesome until the next mornings re-listen proves me wrong but it's not near as prevalent as it used to be.

For me, when I'm inspired by the music because of the music alone, it's much more satisfying than the alternative.

I find the same rule is useful for any altered state.

i agree. It can make you more creative not over thinking things but i find when you actually have to edit its much easier sober. Less problems arise.

When i have a little buzz, whether it be from some beer or herb,
my creative juices just flow and if i have my sounds already made, i can make the most emotional sounding melodies ever.

It really is dependant on the person and how high up there ya are.

I second this, but I wouldn't know cause I don't really do any drugs. Only thing is, it seems like the opposite of the description. I will work on something at 4-5 in the morning, be so tired I could cry, just sick of doing it, but continuing because there is nothing better to do, and it's not like i'm going to sleep anyway. But when I listen in the morning I feel like the next beethoven.

Good thing I only get insomnia sometimes, but it really messes with the college schedule.

Well, I get these insane ideas (not musically persee) when I am high.
These ideas can be interesting to experiment with later when I am sober.

but when I try to make music when high...... well I have these insane ideas in my head, but they are:
1 extremely hard to actually create....as a lot of things are extremely hard to accomplish when high/stoned.
2 constantly changing as i am trying desperately to create the sounds in my head but forget how each knob on the synth/plugin works.

So I usually end up with something that doesn't even sound remotely like the sound in my head. But I still find myself zoning out to the thing I succeded to create what in the morning almost inevitably sounds......well downright retarded..

but I still have had fun and thats what counts?

nah better to enjoy others' music or indeed relisten previously made (when sober) tunes and reflect on those.
