Re: Tips for starting a song...
Here's a question, would it be possible for me to post a very basic cut of.my song and see if anyone can give me some ideas of what to do with it?

Re: Tips for starting a song...
Here is a top for starting a song.
Find a nucleus and build around it.
The nucleus could be anything that sounds cool and inspiring.
Could be a melody, chord progression, beat, new synth patch. Find something that you like and build around it.

Re: Tips for starting a song...
using a combination of dBlue's glitch effect and some clever low pass modulation you can use the same melody throughout.

Sorry to double post but would I be allowed to post a link up here to soundcloud? It's just a very basic cut I could use some ideas of what to do with it.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register] There are some additional vst effects on the website as well. Alot of people don't really care for Dblue glitch because the sounds are very generic and recognizable, so throwing some additional fx on your channel (slight reverb, filters, ect) just be careful as to how many effects you add on to it because you don't want it to start clipping.

Thank you very much, just got it installed and started messing with it a little. I dont want to add too much just enough to make the melody less vanilla and more superman lol.

Definitely true, sometimes an artist excels in confinement though, clever programming goes a long way. You could definitely do this manually though with automation turning off and on effects in the mixer which might produce a better sound. Not something I've tried, probably should.
I don't know how to express modulating an LP filter in ableton terms. In FL I add an LP filter to the mixer channel of whatever sound I want to effect and edit the automation, in the automation panel I can add an LFO pattern or draw the filter manually. If you google something like "dubstep wobble ableton" you'll be sure to find a youtube tutorial on it.
Using complex pads and arps that will end up playing very different sounds as they cut in and out add depth. So you can write two leads and two LP patterns and you can produce 4 different parts, and in my opinion it's a lot easier writing LP patterns than writing new melodies. Doesn't mean you have to write dubstep either, that's just an easy way to find your tutorial.

Re: Tips for starting a song...
Thanks for shedding some light on this stuff, I was a little lost. I think that I got my intro down now I am just looking for some ideas to create a build and a drop. Everything is starting to come together. Kind of.

Re: Tips for starting a song...
Recipe for a drop, lead with hardly any bass (for contrast). drums gradually becoming thinner, a nice swell, a sample, synth hit, an unusual drum sound, or anything at the apex of the swell followed by a tiny moment of silence and then a huge (i like syncopation here) bass line with a vastly different rhythm to the whole song.
listen to some simple songs with good drops and write out to yourself what you think you hear going on.

Re: Tips for starting a song...
Im not sure if I can do this, but I didnt see where it said I couldnt.
If anyone is willing to let me message them a link to my basic cut of my song and listen to it, I would appreciate it as i have to wait 16 more posts to add links...
This is a basic cut of my song. Ive really hit a wall and am looking for some help. What I am trying to work on is:
Any fillers such as atmos added anywhere?
A drop at the end?
Anything else that would help
Ive been racking my brain on this for the past few days... Maybe ill walk away for a day or two.

I'd be glad to listen to your very first track! I remember my first, and I wish I had someone who knew the ropes that could tell me what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. Lol I just realized that can be taken the wrong way.
Anyway, I too have to accumulate more posts, so if you'd like to, then link me yours and I'll link you one of mine for the sake of sharing.

Re: Tips for starting a song...
Hey Pman, I too, am just starting out. So if you'd like, we can trade our first trys; probably wouldn't be as useful as someone with more experience critiquing, but I'm sure some useful observations could be made by each of us!
Message me if you want to!

Re: Tips for starting a song...
A song can start from anything. One granulized sample can be the core of a whole track for me. One newfound bass patch can do the same. Build around the stuff that sounds good to you and dont sweat arrangement too much, its something you can always change later.

Re: Tips for starting a song...
I always start with a kick and a snare then percussion I use that to form my tempo.. then sub... from there I work on my mid bass.. then I use the mid bass to form a bass riff.. I usually add anywhere form 3-5 different Synths to form my bass riff.. by that time I'll have about a 30 sec loop.. I double that then make a switch up with the bass riff.. once I'm happy with that I work on my high register.. when I'm happy with that I double it twice delete one go back to the first block delete my bass riff I made for the meat of the track and work on something different for the intro... that moves right into making my first breakdown into my drop then repeat for the 2nd breakdown (repeat the steps not the melody.. keep em guessin!) then it's countless hours of:
listening, tweaking, listen tweaking, listening, tweaking, listen tweaking, listening, tweaking, listen tweaking, listening, tweaking, listen tweaking, listening, tweaking, listen tweaking... you get the idea...
anywho.. that's my formula...

Re: Tips for starting a song...
well the problem is there are literally millions of ways^^
if you're a real beginner, i'd alway suggest to just try to rebuild a song/intro you like.
halfway you'll always find something different than in the original and go your own way
however, watch the full song tutorial from mr.duder (google it).
gl and dont you dare giving up!
