I decided it would be better to pursue a more "traditional" degree (so i went with history and am planning on going to grad school for international affairs) because these degrees leave you with a lot of room when it comes to job searching. If you go for something like an art degree or music, you are so limited with what you can do with that degree. Most of the people i know with art degrees do not have a job in that field (and instead work crappy day jobs while trying to do their art on the side).

I think art and music degrees are a really really bad choice. You are about to throw $30,000-$100,000+ into a degree. You need to be realistic and choose something that you can get a job in and make decent money. Just because you do music "on the side" doesn't mean you can't put all your heart and soul into it. (just sacrifice sleep.. you don't need sleep.) Art and music are not something that you need a degree in to do well or even get a job doing it. Instead, go the practical and economical route, get a tradition degree, and work your friggin ass off learning as much as you can about music production and see what happens.

(note: still in school, so we'll see how this works out for me, but i thought long and hard about many different artistic and musical type degrees ranging from photography, game design, music production, audio engineer, and a multitude of other things.. i swear i change majors more than i change socks.)
Dad, is that you? No offense, but a history degree is about as useless as a music degree unless you plan on being a teacher.

I got a classical guitar performance degree, but for awhile I was double majoring in performance and music ed. But after two years of that, I realized that I couldn't do both and dropped the ed. degree because I didn't really want to teach (and even if I did, I could teach privately, which I've done, or get a couple more degrees and teach at a college.) I got the degree I did because I wanted to be a musician, which is what I am. I play professionally and even though it isn't classical music that I make a living playing, I'm still using my degree.

If we're talking about electronic music, then the degree to go after might be audio engineering/production because it will allow you to learn the studio much like you would an instrument. I just don't see what the point is to spending 4+ years learning something else if you want to be a musician. Why not try to learn as much as you can about your chosen field by taking classes, having access to the knowledge of professionals in the field, as well as making contacts (and let's be honest, that's one of the biggest reasons to go to college), be the best you can at it, and hustle like hell so you can make a living doing it? To me it seems like a waste of time to study economics if you know you really want to be a musician, unless you think your desire to be a musician is just a passing fad.

I'm doing the exact same ting, except that I study psychology. I'm not planning a carreer in music, because the kind of music I like is very underground anyways & I wouldn't want to do commercial stuff just because I need to live from it. So I'm out of it, but it's certainly possible for someone who really want to make contact trhough school & start a nice career in the field. New talents are always needed!

Re: How many of you have gone to school for music, or still are?

Thank you to everyone for the responses. Certainly has helped me in deciding what to do for college. I'm probably going to music classes right away and wait until 2 year mark where all my general education is done. By then, I will have a clear view of what I want to do and what path I want to take

Currently studying Sound Design and Sound Art @ RMIT in Melbourne. The course is quite experimental as far as sound courses go, and is more rooted in the arts, then in music production.

Re: How many of you have gone to school for music, or still are?

I will be starting a private college here in Los Angeles called icon collective. Its focus is strictly electronic and dance music. Its cost is a little steep at $15,000 for 9 month course but the great thing is that even after I graduate I can go back and use the fully equipped studio for the rest of my life which is well worth it. They teach everything from sound design to composition and arrangement and even djing. Its a very popular school and supported by a lot of big names such as mark night, D Ramirez, Morgan page and even Steve duda teaches a mixing course there. how sick is that??? The only downside is that their not a certified school and they don't offer any degree or certificate but I'm OK with that because when was the last time u heard a banging track and asked yourself "u wonder if this artist has a certificate or a degree?"

I'm just about to finish up music theory and ear training 111. I think everyone should learn at least a tiny bit of theory.

Of course. I meant if you feel like you need it and/or want to get really serious it's great stuff to know. But there's nothing wrong with musicing just for the fun of it.

"...kind of like a drug, I guess" said a recent poster. Exactly. Music's like that! The recording/creative process is as well. It's almost too good to be true sometimes.

Re: How many of you have gone to school for music, or still are?

they made me play recorder in i think second grade. I learned nothing. recorders are shitty instruments.

they also tried to make me sing retarded little kids songs when I had grown up with normal, MODERN music, not dumb old goofy kids shit. I wanted to make music like Red Hot Chili Peppers or Led Zeppelin or Tool or Pink Floyd or Soundgarden at that point.

They took us all to an old folks home and tried to make me sing once, I refused to and they got really mad at me. I was like 'i don't actually know the songs, i don't WANT to know the songs and you know that, I didn't ask to come here, and I don't want to go fake singing in front of a bunch of old people I don't know!'

When I first took piano lessons I liked it and would skip ahead to the next chapters. My teacher had to tell me to slow down. He was this cool rock n roll guy, then he took a better job at a casino and was replaced by this old lady and it sucked, so I quit. I never could stand music in school. The only cool time was when we got to play all these sets of bells. That was sweet. Other than that, I didn't like it. Although one time for the talent show I tried out and was going to play twinkle twinkle little star, but then I accidentally hit the demo button looking for the right sound and I just went with it, then I stopped and that was my demo. My teacher said I was really good and was surprised.

Re: How many of you have gone to school for music, or still are?

Awesome! x3

I would probably have gone with it had I a good teacher I liked and a fucking real instrument, instead of a dumbass recorder.

I think a wind instrument is the worst to learn theory as a whole and the basics of things, piano or guitar or something you can make a damn chord on is much better. you can learn scales and how to form chords but for writing and learning how things work on a simple level, piano or guitar are both solid.

Not that you CAN'T learn and learn well on a wind instrument, and if you like it of cours eyou should run with it, just for someone who doesn't want to focus on one instrument or who doesn't want to play in a fucking orchestral or big band setting, anything like that seems too specific to me for a first instrument.

Piano was my first, then I played drums later in the school band which was sweet.

He actually plays a lot like I do - except he's much better at it than I am, of course! x3

We seem to share a fair bit of bass aesthetic though. Let's hope I can get as good at it as he is eventually!

Re: How many of you have gone to school for music, or still are?

And that's a nice bass.

All I can remember is the same stuff as ghyt, I guess it's just a universal thing to learn recorder? at least before proper Band classes. I never took band, kind of wish I had though, even had those jazz guitar classes and private lessons available. Ah well, it is probably for the best. We had xylophones in grade school too, the tiny ones. My teacher was a pretty good one if I recall. She use to do the DO RA MI with us every day on a paino and told us about chords and scales and such.

But nope I have never tried to do it in a secondary schooling capacity. Maybe I should though. Seems like you guys are getting way cooler classes now than were around when I graduated HS. WTF? They actually have an "electronic music" class?

I strongly considered a music program as opposed to business/finance. I am definitely going to be taking electives that fall into the musical/recording arts programs, and after I earn my degree I will likely attend online or part time.
