Use to. Sometimes it can help with certain things, like for me programming notes in midi was alot more fun at times...on weed. But say I'm riffing some intricate guitar stuff, nah no bueno.

Re: Composing under herbal influence?

Whenever I do, I end up just hooking up some generative tools in Max4Live or Reaktor to some ambient pad sounds, putting a bunch of weird effects on them, and listening to it for hours instead of actually getting anything done.

"Write drunk; edit sober." - Ernest Hemingway.

I find the same rule is useful for any altered state.

Writing music while drunk can be very rewarding.

The best thing, however, is insomnia. It is mind-twisting.

Re: Composing under herbal influence?

it makes absolutely no difference to me.

I only do camomille, tea or the odd catnip sniff every now and then. No differences whatsoever.

Re: Composing under herbal influence?

I'm really considering giving up the herb altogether. We've been friends for well over a decade...it just doesn't seem to fit well into the scheme of my life these days...

Though a little, tiny toke and some quality coffee in the morning on a day off really is a nice way to smooth into the creative process...but then again I'm serious grump in the morning...

problem is when youre used to be creative on drugs, youre gonna have a hard time being so without them.

Re: Composing under herbal influence?

Jokes apart, I've never been able to enter the mood when stoned or drunk.
Being drunk was the worst.

I had once a great session of music making on speed, but it was really bad once relistened.

I can agree with you on the insomnia factor. It can be downright brutal sometimes to an extent that I don't think anything but the hardest drugs can match.

It depends on the strain of weed.

A sativa provides a cereberal high so I feel a lot more motivated and creative, but its difficult to concentrate. I typically do my sampling/synthesis/effects and recording high, otherwise I would rather be sober when working on chunes.

I hate working on music after smoking indicas or kush, the body buzz is way too distracting plus i feel tired.

I certainly wouldn't depend on the stuff.

Personally, I don't find this true at all. But that is just my body and my brain I suppose. I think the key is just breaking yourself of the association. If you get in the habit of smoking before producing you are going to condition yourself to think you need it on a subconscious level. But that is just my arm chair psychology.

Re: Composing under herbal influence?

i will say that i never started actually writing stuff and experimenting with sound until I did psychedelic drugs.

after i started, i started doing it regardless of state of sobriety/lack thereof. but the spark that started me was drugs and The Doors.

One might also argue that a lot of their creativity came out of the drama that drugs caused in their life, not the drugs themselves.

Additionally, it might just be public perception since their sobriety was a matter of public debate. It could also be, depending on the drugs, that the way they heard sounds changed when the worked sober, so their style changed and people didn't like it.

I think this is being really oversimplified. But whatever...really I just feel like being a cunt and arguing...
