How do you start your creative workflow?

Do you start playing around with melodies on a piano or other instrument?

Do you get into a synth and find/program something inspiring?

Do you lay out a beat?

Do you drown yourself in absinthe, completely full of fast burning creative pizazz, finding a classically trained band to transpose your rambling hums into fantastic chart topping hits in about a month until you burn out and go deep acoustic, overdosing and catching that proverbial freedom train shortly after you turn 27?

Do you use a reference song to piece an original track together using personalized elements?

Tell us how you start your creative work flow. What gets your jollys rustled?

Depends on the genre, but I like to start off with a mistake and move on from there.

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

well first i need to turn on my computer, which typically takes around 15 minutes because i have to do it in a special way, first it fails start up diagnostics and then finally i have the option to run it in safe mode which is apparently just normal mode with my files moved to different folders and a few icons changed. anyway once that happens i open up my daw and let everything fuck up and then i work around it to create ~*~*~art*~*~. if u want a cool computer like i have make sure to get stoned and delete certain hkey registries to get interesting audio-visual effects like cool rainbows on live streams and randomly sped up/slowed down/glitched up sound. Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

For a while there was this whole "dont start w the beat" idea going around when it came to dance music...but my favorite part about 80s and 90s dance music is that the beat is the track. Ive come back around to starting w making a infectious loop.

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

Do something you haven't done before, or haven't done for some time. It doesn't even need to be music. Creativity is vibe and everything is connected once you get the juice in the air. You catch that wave of excitement. Everything is brighter, everything tastes better, everything is fun...and you WANTA make something.

On the way home from my trip we had fun doing time lapse videos of our road trip. I am going to merge them all together and make a song inspired by the different shots.

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

I wait until it's late and I'm dead tired. Lay down a chord progression that isn't awfully depressing. Then I make a beat and change how the chords play to match said beat so it's not too boring. Come up wtih a good melody and start arrangement when I'm done adding instruments. Quit because mixing is time consuming and not all that interesting, so I come back in 6 months and finish it.

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

start making shit with really lots of automations and peak controller lfos, i automate delay wet\drys to make somewhat pulsing rhythm, automate pitch, usually octave up or down to stay in key, then add samples, electronic noises beeps bloops, samples from games and freesound.com, short samples percussion made from enveloped noises,
most probably projects like this end up unsaved and exported as wav witch will end up in another project of same type, this cycle repeats several times until it ends up as pad in "normal" ebm/trance song or ends up unchanged, monstrosity

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

I usually make music when I'm bored or frustrated, so it usually starts with a riff that stems from said frustration. But then I try to transition it into something positive and play with that dynamic between dark and light. It's a meditative excercise/puzzle game sometimes.

Love this. I've come to view my music as more something I do for its own sake rather than a fan base. That doesn't always mean its very good, though I do strive to make better music each song I write. There is this thing which I've never been able to get down in words that I want to express with electronic music. Not quite there yet.

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

With a synth sequence, or an easy piano structure (i am only capable to play easy piano structures...)

Then i play some melody on, and always chords. I copy and paste the chords, (the bottom line of the triad), to reinforce the bass... in the armony between chords, sequence and melody i usually find new elements to develop...

While working on listening to the song i usually watch different pics which i love like desktop wallpaper. these give me different perspectives about the same song, avoiding i get bored about listening the same stuff again anda again, while working in it...

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

I usually spend twenty minutes getting everything set just right, making a cuppa joe/tea, clearing the random bullshit work papers off the keyboards, open Ableton, and just stare at it for a couple of minutes while I try and will the music into the computer. Sometimes I press random keys on the keyboard or MIDI controller to help the process. Then I remember shit that I needed to do for work, or that I didn't take the trash out, or that I forgot to turn the burner off while I was making coffee, or that my transmission had been slipping, so I fix those problems. Usually start humming something while I do that, so whenever I actually go back to making music, I'll have some jaunty little tune in my head to work with.

Or sometimes I'll open up an old project and stare at it for awhile, then remember why I shelved it and put it back on said shelf.

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

I usually start with a question or questions, as in, "I wonder what it would sound like if I stretched that field recording of a cow breaking wind out to 8 times its original length?" and "I wonder what the elongated cow fart would sound like run through that Max 4 Live patch that makes almost everything sound like bad elevator jazz?" and "Oh man that sounds like really bad elevator jazz, I wonder what it would sound like if I pitched it 3 octaves down and , put a multi-tap delay line on it and glitched it up with a granulator plug in?" etc. etc. If that doesn't work I consume large quantities of alcohol and repeat the process

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

A) I hear something somewhere that just excites the everlovingfuck out my GET DOWN and I want to recreate that same energy (Richard Travers just did this to me with his six in the morning track in the Listening Booth!).

B) I hear something that has a good component it, but my ear says they fucked something up so I go to fix that idea in my own way.

C) I watch a documentary on something to do with music (or sometimes on science, or anthropology, or whatever) and my train of thought runs into an A + B kind of situation (mixing fields of music), or I hear/watch something and it sparks a novel idea in my head and off I go. I might be trying to experiment with some fusion of concepts, or I might be trying to capture the essence of some topic/idea.

Being that my roots are in rhythm guitar, I tend to start at the rhythm and work out from there...but not always at all.
Sometimes I'm specifically starting with the drums because I'm specifically experimenting with a drum idea.
Other times I might have gotten a tune for a melody stuck in my head (I whistle pretty much constantly).
Other times I'll start with the bass because that's what I heard in my head, or that's what I heard and wanted to base it off of (happens when I hear Michael Jackson music, or study old Chicago House music...or Giorgio Moroder).

Then again, I may start with strings because the idea I had began with symphonic sounds which I later decided to convert into pads...who knows!?

Basically I don't often sit down and say, "Right; now to work on a track."
I usually wait until something hits and then I sit down and go for it.

The trick, in my opinion, is to constantly be thinking of music in the back of your head so that it can leap up and say "HEY!" when something, the tiniest thing comes along...I mean, I was checking out a the Grocery Store once and the the machine said, "System Processing. Swipe or Insert Card and Follow Instructions on Pin Pad."
The way it sounded and the grammar of the sentence just grabbed me and I whipped out my phone and recorded it when I bought something again so that I could use it as the basis for a song.
I have no clue what that song will be, but I know it will be influenced by the uncanny timbre and the mechanistic beat pattern of that computer voice message.

Re: How do you start your creative workflow?

It usually starts when i don't have time for anything. It's THAT moment, everybody knows very well. I just start my DAW program, put first segment of the future greatest hit there, and after 15h of amok i'm still in front of the computer, with 2mins of track, without a will to continue. I save the track and don't go back.
