How do you usually start a song?

So what's your usual way of starting a track? Do you get inspired by a particular song and try to emulate it in some way? Do you get inspired by particular sections of different songs and then combine them together and put your own twist on it? Or does everything you make come purely out of your head?

Re: How do you usually start a song?

Most everything I make comes from me and me alone, but if I'm loosely basing something on another song, I'll add a changed-up version of the melody to start.

Usually, I begin with the background noise and synths and whatnot, adding a lead or a few on top once I have something good to back them up. Drumlines come last in the beginnings of a song, and I tend to spend the most time on them (and have the most fun making them).

If I have an idea of the kind of tune I want, it's definitely easier to start. If I don't, I mess around until I find something neat.

Re: How do you usually start a song?

I have two different kind of starts:

1) An idea just pops into my head and I record the melody whistling to my iPhone, and then when I go home I translate it to a midi file by ear.

2) I feel useless without ideas, so I just jump through old projects and steal a melody from an unreleased one and change it (usually the final result has nothing to do with the original melody, but it is just for a starting point).

3) I import a midi file from a drop I've made, I use it with Serum, I start playing arround with the knobs (not randomly though) and then BOOM I find a nice synth and I'm good to go! Then I start playing some notes till my head can think of a melody.

Re: How do you usually start a song?

I start with a rough outline of what I want it to sound like in my mind. I may listen to some of my favorite songs, focusing on a specific element that I like and the general feel of the genre. Then I put some drum kit together, start sound design, design a lot of different elements, play around with some melodies/arpeggios and when I have enough elements start putting some movements and motifs together. Usually that's quite dynamic and I keep some of the things that emerge and gel and progressively narrow it down to the final concept. I usually have too many motifs, sounds, and elements as I start, so the process can take a while.

Techno starts with a capital 'T', as in TB-303 and TR-808.

I usually start by making a chord progression and melody and playing around with different presets.

Very different. Sometimes I hear something that inspires a lot of the song I make, like I make a copy but with my twist on it, or it just inspires an element of a song, like the drums, bass or lead.

Sometimes I just mash keys and tweak knobs and sliders until something sounds interesting. sometimes its on guitar others a synth. Sometimes I just try make a decent drum beat and build from there.

Sometimes I write text/lyrics that I try make work as song.

Sometmes I have this image in my head, from movie or dreams or fantasy that I wanna soundtrack and build a story around.

Re: How do you usually start a song?

I generally start working by building stuff around a particular synth. I just find ways to fit in in a composition and build the breakdown right around it, before getting to the rest of the track. Oftentimes this very synth gets deleted in the process, but it's a worthy sacrifice.

Re: How do you usually start a song?

I usually put a note into Fl studio with my favorite soft synthesizer and then something moves me about that particular sound. and I begin to write based off of that "vibe"

Re: How do you usually start a song?

I typically start with a drum sample, chop it up and re-arange it, then build a programmed beat over top of that and if it has a nice groove, I will continue. Sometimes I will start with something and then completely change it around until it sounds "right". Trial and error

I'm at the sad point where I just remix/polish hundreds of old songs... but I used to write them out. On paper. Seriously.

Re: How do you usually start a song?

Pick a tempo, work out a chord progression and then sketch out the skeleton of the track as quick as possible. I find I give up on songs a lot more if I focus too much on a 4-8 bar phrase.

Worry about the instrumentation once you've more of an idea where the track is going.
