Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets have 'em!

Mu; Masters of Psychedellic Ambience - Atom Heart/Tetsu Ionue - (personal fave from two masters, rare as rocking horse shit back in the day but on iTunes now)

Dreamfish - Pete Namlook/ Mixmaster Morris - (classic trippy ambient album from the early 90's, bubbly, deep and analogue)

Outland - Pete Namlook/Bill Laswell - (my fave dark ambient album, something a Sith would listen too after a long day killing Jedi)

Biosphere - Dropsonde - (a little more upbeat than some other albums from Gier but it's pure class)

Waiting for Cousteau - Jean Michel Jarre - (the 40min title track is still a masterpiece even by today's standards tho the rest of the album is more for the fanboys like me)

Whats your top five?

(btw please be a little more original than SAWII, FSOL or The Orb which are bleeding obvious)

Off the top of my head:

Belong - October Language
Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Insen
Lucine icl - Language barrier

I know that's not five, but they're genius.

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Belong is fantastic. Hammock's last album was similar in tone - almost all of the sounds were made with guitars, and no rhythm section at all.

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Seconded with Tim Hecker..

I'll add:

Fennesz - Black Sea
Stars of the lid - And their refinement of the decline
Brian Eno - Ambient 1 : Music for Airports
Vromb - Episodes

I know the vromb isn't STRICTLY ambient, but it has that hypnotic vibr.

Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet
Aidan Baker - The Sea Swells a Bit...

all that comes to mind at the moment.

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

yeh I love the Elvis samples behind massive walls of reverb - and that original version of Last Train To Trancentral with those 'all the way down the east coast' vocal samples. There is a version of that on the 12" of Last Train To Trancentral, it has drumbeats though - although quite soft...

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

fav 5 changes month to month

Tim Hecker - harmony in ultraviolet
alva noto - Xerrox vol.2 ( well i would have said xerox vol 1 until 2 came out and before that a few other of his albums, they are sensational)
clint mansel - the fountain
murcof - cosmos (and maybe martes)
Susumu Yokota - Sakura

have to say that tim hecker's HAU never leaves top 5

tangerine dream pheadra / alpha cent. are also up there
robert rich and vladislav delay also rated highly

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

October Language - Belong
Far Away Trains Passing By - Ulrich Schnauss
A Strangely Isolated Place - Ulrich Schnauss
Remembranza - Murcof
Music Has the Right to Children - Boards of Canada

I listen to a lot of music on last.fm though, so perhaps my list would be different if I'd listened to more whole albums, rather than individual songs.

Thanks a lot. It really helps when people put little descriptions next to their choices. I'm just getting into ambient so I don't recognise a lot of the titles.
