Don't know exactly what I'm looking for...

Perhaps ya'll can help me out here...I used to listen some of this great downtempo ish, chillout stuff on Chill XM radio...specifically what I'm talking about had half-time drums (so Dubstep/Trap ish, but no cheesey boom bap drums for the most part). Really sparse arrangements, a lot of atmospheric stuff going on. I feel like two names that came up a lot were Grimes and Clams Casino, but when I went to listen to their music today none of it even came close to fitting the bill, perhaps I've forgotten and what I heard were remixes of their work.

I tried searching "Chillstep" but that is not, I'm pretty sure, what I am looking for. A lot of pop music these days is sparse in the right way, but much of it is too cheesey and is vocal oriented. Diplo's stuff comes close at times, but I feel like it is his pre-Major Lazer remix work I'm thinking of.

I'm sorry I can't even post one example of what I'm looking for, but I'm having a hell of a time finding anything even close enough to post.

Hmm. I think I know what you mean. Maybe isn't it, but maybe something with some clicky micro edits, sort of house oriented? Big atmospheres? Too far off?

P.s. Love grimes

Re: Don't know exactly what I'm looking for...

I guess you could call it house oriented. That wouldn't be my first go to description though. For myself, the beats are usually simple dubstep beats, X0X kicks and accoustic snares/rimshots. And yea, there may be some clicky micro edits.

Everything is sparse, sparse, sparse. Lots of reverb on everything. If I can find something. Maybe think James Blake ish? But w/o all the vocal non-sense.

I don't think anyone would have trouble calling what I'm looking for chillout or downtempo music.

I know I'm not giving anyone much to go on here. Feel free, anyone, to post anything you think might fit the bill!

P.S. I still ended up liking Grimes ;p

Re: Don't know exactly what I'm looking for...

I was totally thinking along the lines of James Blake! I've been listening to the same type of thing lately, but not really taking names. Check out Pearson Sound maybe. I'll post some others shortly.

Also, Farben, maybe Jan Jelinek

Looking at the current last played list ([Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
), I think a lot of what they are playing is pretty eclectic (leaning towards the more popular side of EDM artists). As far as genres go, "chillstep", "chillwave", and "deep house" are good starting points, but perhaps a better description is they are picking the chill stuff from artists often better known for something else.

EG: At the moment (I know it will be different later), on the playlist is ODESZA (generally considered "indietronica"), Duke Dumont (normally known as a deep house artist), Daft Punk and Royksopp (both kind of are synth-pop bands with occasional forays into house and downtempo territory these days, I think), Groove Armada (usually pigeonholed into the trip hop genre), and Disclosure (usually thrown into the UK garage category).

A lot of artists of course have more mellow songs in their catalog and genres are rather fluid these days. For instance probably about half of ODESZA's catalog probably fits your bill but then there's the other half that probably is not.

I will say one artist that immediately comes to mind that kind of fits your description is Phaeleh. All the stuff I've heard from that artist is nice cinematic reverb-drenched ambience with the dubstep half time rhythm, but with more subtle clicky (almost garage type) beats.

Re: Don't know exactly what I'm looking for...

Thanks again guys. From what I have checked out so far I like all the recommendations, though ODESZA comes the closest the most often. This is the kinda stuff, generally speaking, that I'm looking for:

I'd love to know of anything like this that uses less found sound percussion and more synthesized/X0X drum sounds and more synthesizers and less "organic" instruments. I know it is out there as I used to hear it all the time, lol. One big reason I'm harping on this is I'm kinda leaning toward this kinda of thing in my own work and am looking for a bit of inspiration.

EDIT: Dream Koala and Shlohmo are kinda working for me as well...I found a couple reddit threads I thought might lead me to more, but I keep ending up with a lot of really cheesey Trap stuff, lol.

EDIT 2: Just taking notes for myself at this point...Blackbird Blackbird seems like a possability...I'm also thinking what I'm imagining in my head doesn't exist so much as I thought...but still finding quite a bit at this point...

Balam Acab is kinda interesting except all the cheesey chipmunk vocals : (

Teebs is getting close. Digging this quite a bit and suspect I have heard a lot of his work before...

Southern Shores a bit...perhaps a bit to dream pop for my taste, but interesting and digging all the hand drum goodness.

Re: Don't know exactly what I'm looking for...

Overall, what I think you are looking for is somewhere near Psybient/Psychill - chillout music with primarily electronic elements, right? Most of it also includes silly sampled "ethnic" instruments, but still. The sample track you linked was not very beat-driven though, whereas most of that genre has a clear beat to it. For example:

Beyond that, somewhere in the same vein maybe check out Akshan

And perhaps Koan - if this fits the bill, they're pretty productive.

EDIT: No idea with the embedding. Embedding is magic. I am apparently rather bad at magic. Tried removing the s from [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
but to no avail.

Re: Don't know exactly what I'm looking for...

I'll throw in a few artists here:

Tycho is not as "trap" oriented as many of the others these days, but I think the vibe can be similar to the ODESZA track you posted sometimes.

Galimatias seems to be just purely chill trap, at least anything I've heard. The stuff he did with Alina Baraz is more popular, but is a little more R&Bish, whereas some of the solo stuff might fit what you want, maybe.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

Here's another example of "indie artists that goes really chill" that's kind of the category I put ODESZA in. Some Teen Daze songs are probably not terribly chill. Some are more (eg "Alaska"). If this is more your thing, than maybe even some not quite so chill artists that are a bit like ODESZA (like say Purity Ring) would work.

thanks man. I will check those out for sure. Yes, chillout music with primarily electronic instruments.

@[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
thank you as well. I did come across Tycho in my search, I've always liked his work when I came across it. I also came across Teen Daze and Purity Ring, I've liked some Purity Ring in the past, though the newer stuff seems way more pop and vocal oriented...either that or I was listening to remixes in the past. I'll dig through all that again.

Actually, I think missed Teen Daze, that's all sounding good. Some of the Psybient stuff is pretty spot on even if it leans a little toward what I might call new age/yoga hippie cafe/world music.

I also rememerbed Panthu Du Prince is another one I used to listen to a lot on Chill XM and Bonobo.

Re: Don't know exactly what I'm looking for...

really good album, each track is ear candy

another album, almost the same world?

liquid stranger he usually does a typical grimy dubstep but he does some left field electronic dub/chill, its aight i guess

this was juxtaposed to their junior album (this one is senior), its very good and will take you places if you haven't heard. its ambient, chill, sans their pop-yness. couple tracks they cant help it but trust

if i think of anything different ill come back, all the good ones had been mentioned already. and odeza is a quasi knock off festival bonobo lol or whateverz. more will come to me later, bonobo would of been my first suggestion, just works all parameters plus it sounds gewd

edit: BOP, hes like blippy/glitch dnb, its chilled enough if you ask me. might be too abstract to what you want though

forgot about this wank - this was the only vid that didnt give me an ad , you can explore around yourself :p

as far as sparse two-step chill goes, Deep Heads releases some pretty cool stuff, maybe you could check it out.
[Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

Not all of it is great, of course. This one's pretty good:

Then, you could try early Rump Recordings. There's a lot of quality downtempo released on there, although with a tendency towards mixing electronics and acoustic instruments.
The first three albums Rumpistol released are still exceptional

Tipper is a good suggestion, too.

I hear you, though, the line between chill and cheese is easily crossed
