What seperates the genres?

In particular, the differences between Industrial and Aggrotech and Dark Noise and EBM and the other related subgenres?

Well, since you introduced yourself as an industrial dark noise artist, I would reckon you to be more qualified to tell us.

To me, EBM refers to the early 90s style of music Front242 stands for. Harder in style, but with minimal use of distortion in vocals and a clean, albeit synthetic sound. Industrial, to me, is harsher, atonal, using industrial noise samples for FX and percussion of Die Krupps provenance.

Aggrotech I've heard attached to God Module and Amduscia with a blend of the above, aggressive and noise laden, and with heavily distorted vocals.

Noise and dark noise I have no reference point for, but would assume it to be a further descend into atonal dissonance.

Personally, I file all of the above under Techno : Industrial

Re: What seperates the genres?

By these definitions, what separates Aggrotech (Wumpscut) from the more electronic mid-era Skinny Puppy?

I personally use a mixture of electronic beats, electric guitar and bass, industrial samples, computer generated noise and sub-bass, synth, vocals with or without distortion, and audio collage using samples from video and movies.

Re: What seperates the genres?

Super saws - aggro tech uses and abuses them, and you'll rarely if ever hear them in old school electro industrial (Skinny Puppy, Frontline, etc)

Also, I often (not always) find the older (SP, FLA) stuff to be more densely layered, vs Aggro, which can be on the more simple side.

EBM is typically more stripped down and more rhythmically driven, think Nitzer Ebb and Front 242.

It's all highly subjective tho, this is just my 2 cents.

Re: What seperates the genres?

Good analysis.

So just tone stacking saw frequency waves and running it through effects is all that is needed for 'super saws'? I need to try this now.

Most of these are pretty clear cut, but I don't believe in dark noise. It's either dark ambient or noise. Or death industrial

Re: What seperates the genres?

I always just called what I did 'Industrial' and also used the tags of electronic, Industrial Metal, IDM, and sometimes ambient. People started calling it different things like 'Post-Industrial Dark Noise' or 'Audio Collage'.

My music is structured, so it isn't pure dissonant noise. I do experiment with different patterns like Forwards > Backwards > Forwards > Inside Out, or layer a 4/4 pattern over an 8/8 pattern (if I am describing that right) or sometimes 3/4 over 12/12.

'Dark' is descriptive of quality or mood rather than a format pattern.

Guitar and a few other instruments are not new to me but I am self taught and only 1 year into mixing with free software by trial and error.

I am proud of my first published album for being 1 year into this and I hope to learn more from more experienced mixers and collaborate.
