Loop libraries also have often "one shots", which are single bass hits or tom hits or cymbal crashes that you can put together to make your own "set".

But how do you isolate individual bits? If you didn't you'd have a synth in there with a kick?

True, but the layered synths can be a cool effect with a nice amount of mud. Clever EQ'ing can help you out with this.
