KRK8400 have been amazing for me back when I was an audio engineer. I'd like to own an open back pair though now.

I'm not sure how popular this answer will be but I've genuinely had no problems with Beats! Excellent sound quality and block out most outside noise

In general, there's nothing wrong with Beats by themselves, they are decent cans. It's just that they are still really overpriced. You're basically paying an extra 150-200 just for the brand.

Re: Good headphones?

I think it depends if you are looking for studio headphones or listening headphones. I haven't used Beats, but I was under the impression they boosted some frequencies for more enjoyable listening, which doesn't translate well for mixing.

I know this is not the place to lust about non-studio headphones, but I treid a pair of Blue Mo-Fi yesterday and the sound blew my mind.

Re: Good headphones?

My personal belief is that great mixing headphones are also great listening headphones. Because mixing phones are meant to accurately represent the music, meaning a flat frequency response. And an artist most likely spent loads of time and money mixing. So to honor that and hear what they intended me to hear i like flat headphones

One of my favorite headphones are a company called Grado. They make $79 headphones all the way up to $2,000+ I think they are the best in their price ranges, but i would shoot for a $200 pair. They are open back so there's not a lot of isolation. Not the best for when your on the train, but very good for mixing and accurate listening.

Oh and don't get Beats by Dre! They are so incredibly colored! basically fancy skull candy lol. Fashion over function...

I have the Bayerdynamic DT770's and I really enjoy them, don't use em as much as monitors, but they reveal a good amount of things my monitors don't.

Akg k240 studios are really nice. Not too pricey either. Seems neutral and full to my ears.

Re: Good headphones?

I've used a pair of Grado Labs SR60 in the studio for maybe 10 years now, and just ordered the second pair of replacement foam ear-pads for them a few days ago (the foam starts to disintegrate from the sweat after a while). If I lost them, I'd buy a new pair straight away if possible.

They are open style and let in a lot of background noise, so they won't work well in a noisy environment. They play very well at low volumes, and are super light. Also I have a huge bulbous head and the fit is still very comfortable.

I love my cans to be uber flat(they are pretty much there with the sonarworks ref 3 VST curve) for mixing but for listening, I like a slightly rolled off top end/euphony

oh and for the OP/thread

Audio Technica ATH-M50 are absolutely OUTSTANDING for mixing. especially with the sonarworks VST plugin. I actually heard about the m50s from Uber-mixing legend George Massenburg.. and theyve really taken over the pro audio realm , becoming a bit of a standard.

for personal listening, I use the same, but using viper4android i have made my own convolution IR to get the sound where I want it

I also love AKG 701s, but they are open back...and that can be annoying for mixing.

I've had the Sr225i for about 5 years! I think Grados are very picky, so not the best mix headphone for me, but definitely my favorite listening headphone when I'm in the right mood. When you pick something those things like, it's like the planes of existence align and no other headphone can sound that good. I got a tube amp for christmas last year and it just took them to the next level. In any case, I still reference my mixes through them to check for smoothness in the top end and tone. Just tone.

Re: Good headphones?

I really loved the BeyerDynamic DT770's, until I left them on the airplane! I replaced them with the DT770 pros and much preferred the older ones. Much more comfortable, and they had a furry ring around the ear, which was comfortatble enough to wear for hours upon hours
