What should I do with all 72,241 of my drum samples?

Over 8 years I've collected and mostly purchased all these drum samples and for the first time I looked at how many I have and it came to 72,241 samples. Like personally I would like to have maybe a couple hundred, I find it overwhelms me when trying to find a kick or snare, but what do you think?

Edit: thats not including the steven slate drums, komplete 9 ultimate drums, ableton drums.

I also enjoy making my own from scratch

Re: What should I do with all 72,241 of my drum samples?

My choice literally comes down to if I want the d16 808 or 909 about 95% of the time. I'm a fucking pleb. And the other 5% is probably hihats run by drumaxx or free snare samples to give the track a different taste with those same kicks. But seriously, this is why I prefer synthesizing drums to sampling as much as possible. The d16 stuff and drumaxx are synthesizers. My sample collection is maybe 750 files. I like my way, but it sounds like you wouldn't enjoy it so I won't label it as a suggestion or anything.

The first step of solving a problem is admitting you have a problem.

The long way to solve this would be to go through your library and save in a folder only the ones you really like. This might take ages

The fastest way would to pick a sample pack you really like and limit yourself to that, adding some synthesised ton as you go.

If you can re-download from wherever you purchased from, delete them and see if you really care once you get back into your groove. See if it actually impacts your creativity at all.

I find that less ___ (fill in the blank) makes me much more creative, but we're all different. If you can't organize them properly though, they might be more of a burden than a creative tool.

Re: What should I do with all 72,241 of my drum samples?

If we are just talking drums I'll load about 2 dozen into my sampler for a few songs or for an EP. If I feel I'm missing something during the process I'll go look again. But I try to stick to this limitation.

No need to delete or organize IMO--just create a limitation for yourself.

I have most of mine stored on backup drives. I'll move the samples to project folders. It does create redundancy, but fuck it man. Storage is stupid cheap now. I've got a pile of hard drives laying around. Even pretty damn good sample packs are cheap. I just use something until I'm bored with it on move on.

You can always roll your own from vinyl, cassette and CD or with synthesis. I don't get bent out of shape about it. I've got a few go to packs. But other than that I look at the sample dig as part of the process. I don't over think it. When I'm feeling saucey I go looking in unfamiliar places...

A massive sample library is only a problem if you let it be.

Play them all simultaneously, record one "meta-drum" sample. Use for every drum sound needed.

Wow that's more files than all of my current data. You need a search and sort technique and a data diet!

Put them into AVLINUX and run the command to turn them into a SoundFont.
Sure it will take 12 years just to save them and then another 12 years just to load them, but it will be the world's biggest SoundFont

Re: What should I do with all 72,241 of my drum samples?

here's another idea

go to folder
sort by size
select all
rename to "drum"

result is drum(1).wav to drum(4397).wav from longest to shortest sound
then all you need is faith to find your desired sound

Wow! I knew I'd find a gem of an answer. Cheers man totally am going to do this!

Funny I was actually thinking of investing $94CAD/$80USD into this to help me. Im about to pull the trigger. Im thinking damn, but always gotta invest into your art right? Tell me this isn't a bad purchase for this context;

If you want large file management systems, I'd bet you can find something free. If you do go with that, I'd stay away from letting it do the dithering and sample rate conversions as that adds (in order) noise and distortion that won't help anything because your daw will use at least 32 bit floating point audio internally and your plugins will accept and run the audio at sample rates all over the place. You want the convert sample rate and dither one time, when you render the master of your track.
