I have my main riff, now what?

So I finally create a riff that I like!

soundcloud (dot) com/andrew-hua-1/practice2/s-5sEIp

Mixing isn't really done yet, I just exported this really quick.

But... I'm not really sure how I create other riffs. Should other riffs be derived from this main riff by shifting keys? Octaves? Or should other riffs be completely different?

Sorry for the nub question :/ I'm having trouble diversifying my song.

For starters, it would be nice if your melody could deviate from the kick...fill the gaps in a bit rather than only on the 1/4 note. As for what to play...figure out what key your track is in and play notes from the corresponding scale. There's one or two odd sounding notes in your track, I dunno, maybe it was just the quality. Anyway, here's exactly what you should do:

Not really .

Re: I have my main riff, now what?

I gave a listen to your riff and it's a good start.

To diversify a song I might try adding some layers or effects - just throw a bunch of stuff in and tinker about with EVERYTHING.

Then again you might still need other parts - for this particular sample I'd put some drums in too maybe after a couple of bars with a compressor on the main riff to give that ducking effect - but it's all up to you really and what you think maybe even chuck in a vocal sample to give the beat a bit more feeling or something or you could shift it up an octave.

I hope this helps anyway and I'd love to hear the final cut feel free to PM me or something when ya manage to 'diversify' it.

Re: I have my main riff, now what?

I just woke up with another beat playing in my head so I'm gonna see if I can somehow mix it in. I guess I subconsciously made the notes on the beat rather than syncopated because the first song I tried to make was a wee bit too complex for me.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Actually, that sounded a bit harsh.

Nah, I know where you guys are coming from.

I think I found the weird sounding chord, the third one. Can't figure out how to fix it though.

Moving away from the on the beat rhythms helped a ton. Made 3 more melodies now.

throw a reverse on the end. bring in the drums. switch up the melody. do a breakdown then buildup in to the chorus. sounds pretty sweet.

Re: I have my main riff, now what?

Protip: People really don't care about your work in progress stuff, they only care about "finished" products. (Just a general tip that's semi-related to the topic)

Anyways, your question itself is really vague; we can't make your songs for you because that's your job as an artist. The only piece of advice I can give you on what you should do is finish the song before you move on to the next one. Also, don't take weeks or months working on a single song or making it "perfect" because even if you spend months polishing a turd, it's still going to be a turd.

I dunno man about that man, other amateurs who are on the same track and styles care about your WIPs.
