How to reduce VU?

Hello. I have noticed that on some of my tracks I have high VU levels. In most cases I cant figure out how to reduce that. Is there any tips or tricks for that. If I am not wrong - levels must be from -10 til - 6.
Sometimes I cant get out that blasting sound out of my tune because of those high VU levels.

Re: How to reduce VU?

But it does no reduce VU levels. [ok it does] But if a track is quet I have to turn volume back on hardware for example. And the VU level goes up again.
I think the problem here for me is in subbas/ base line. Have to redeuce VU levels somewere there.
Just not shure how to do it right.
Still experimenting.

Re: How to reduce VU?

if you ensure your mix is -6dB of headroom, then get your track mastered by someone who knows what they're doing you'll a)get a better sounding track across all playback systems and b) get valuable feedback about your mix to help make it the best it can be

Re: How to reduce VU?

I meant what are you listening your mix on ? studio monitors or headphones or... else ? I asked that because maybe you can't hear the bass properly and don't realise it's too loud in the mix.

The VU meter is really just an indicator of decibels i.e. general volume. It goes in the red zone if your signal is clipping. That's why it's used when recording and mixing. To be sure the audio is neat and workable.
You keep -6db headroom so that the rendered audio can be used in the mastering process.

It's not about frequencies, it's about volume.

Re: How to reduce VU?

also, don't use your master gain to lower it. leave that alone, well alone. mix your tracks channels using their gain instead

Re: How to reduce VU?

If I had some tracks sent to mastering I always keep headroom.
But mainly I do it myself.

And I understand about those channel gains utt.

I don't have studio monitors yet. I have two Varfedele speakers with Yamaha amplifier.
And yes it could be a reason that those speakers do no represent that low fq are too much.
So maybe that is why my tune sounds "heavy" - Not wry loud and airy utt.
